My wife and I have filed our taxes with the Kewanee, IL H & R Block office for 10 years now. We were in their office on Jan. 17 2012 and filed our taxes. We were told by the preparer that our refund would be on our emerald card on Jan. 25. Now it is Jan. 25 and NO refund.
We used the coupon we received in the mail for a free efile for our basic tax return form, and I mean basic. We rent our home, we have no gambling earnings, no foreign accts., or ANYTHING that would cause our tax filing to be compicated and still got charged $218 and were only there 25 minutes. We thought the charge was a bit extreme but were thankful that at least the efile part was free or so they say.
On the coupon and on television comercials Block claims 7 to 14 days for your refund to be in your acct. which is obviously a lie because after calling the Kewanee H & R Block office today we were told by Shirley that our refund wont come now until the 1st of February or later. Shirley was rather rude and never even appologized for the delay. I thanked her for their kindness over the last 10 years and told her we felt betrayed by their business, again NO apology. I told Shirley then that we would not be back to H & R Block again and she said well that is your choice and still NO apology.
If we receive our refund on the 1st as she stated, that would make it 15 days which doesn't fall between H & R Blocks advertisements for the 7 to 14 days. That to me means FALSE and DECEPTIVE business practices. How can they legally advertise something but NOT stand behind it?? After 10 loyal years they now have betrayed us so it will be Jackson-Hewitt next year for us. I will be telling anyone and everyone we know how we were treated by H & R Block and hopefully nobody else will get the shaft from their deceptiveness like we have.

" ANYTHING that would cause our tax filing to be compicated and still got charged $218 "
Why would you do this? If your return is truly uncomplicated, you could file it yourself for free. It would take you 1/2 hr. to do.
" If we receive our refund on the 1st as she stated, that would make it 15 days which doesn't fall between H & R Blocks advertisements for the 7 to 14 days. "
I find it extremely amusing that THIS is your complaint (not $218 for a dirt simple return). Do you know where refunds come from? I'll give you a clue. Not from H & R Block. They come from the Dept. of the Treasury. H&R Block has no control over when refunds are paid. Before complaining, did it ever occur to you to notice that they always say "approximately 7 -14 days"? Do you know what "approximately" means? I'll help you out. If it shows up in 15 days instead of 14 days, that's approximately right.
" I will be telling anyone and everyone we know how we were treated by H & R Block and hopefully nobody else will get the shaft from their deceptiveness like we have. "
You are quite a piece of work. Do you think people really take you seriously enough to pay attention to your tax advice?
" it will be Jackson-Hewitt next year for us. "
One last clue. People who have dirt simple tax returns should not pay someone hundreds of dollars (or even tens of dollars) to file their return. You're ripping yourself off.
