My complaint is that Harbor Freight must sell inferior product. I purchased a Drillmaster Cordless drill on May 29th, 2013 because my DeWalt batteries went bad and it would cost me more for batteries than for the drill that was advertised with a battery and charger for $19.99. I only use the drill once or twice a year and figured that even with the extended warranty, my usage did not warrant a heavy duty drill or the extended warranty.
Today, 12/7/13 I used the drill for the second time and after about taking out 6 screws, the drill will not work. The light comes on, but doesn't turn.
I called the store manager and explained that I was a first time customer on May 29th, 2013 and told him exactly the same details mentioned above. I was told that he apologised, but that if I didn't buy the extended warranty there was nothing he could do. I told him that the drill was obviously defective and that in my business, I help out customers in a situation like this by telling them to buy one, put the old one in the box and return it. He told me that he could not do this and there was nothing he could do.
I will no longer purchase product at Harbor Freight because I feel that (although the product may be inexpensive), what good is paying less for something that will not hold up. It's just not worth it.

still not a ripoff...

You bought a $20 drill and over 6 months later YOU expect them to swap it out for you. How exactly does this factor into logic? Is it because you bought it there? If so I hate to break this to you, but you have to redeem this with the MANUFACTURER!!! To do ANYTHING else is to just show YOUR laziness and stupidity. The manager is right, they cant do anything as DISHONEST as what you suggest or want them to do.
Most RETAIL stores give you a 14-30 day return window. In that timeframe they can actually do something to assist you. Past the 30 day mark their hands are tied. Then when something goes wrong you MUST go to the MANUFACTURER to get them to replace it. As that would fall into the MANUFACTURERS WARRENTY. To blame the retailer for A. Not wanting to lose their job B. Not wanting to have to PAY for that dishonesty as most corporate giants pass the costs of that dishonesty right back on the store itself, is nothing more then YOU being a ja*****.
Stop being lazy and contact the MANUFACTURER. STOP blaming a innocent party for both your laziness and ignorance. And stop wasting the web going publics time because this is NOT a ripoff by the retailer. This IS a RIPOFF BY THE CONSUMER!! Because they wont be as SHADY AS YOU ARE, you feel its alright to post on a website smearing their name.
Well if anything all you have done is show us all that in this case that particular Harbor Freight is being HONEST and working with INTEGRITY. Something Im not so sure YOU have. Anyone that would suggest what is BASICALLY theft by suggesting that you put your broken drill in the new box and returning it. YOU may feel its ok to SCREW others over. But what I see is Harbor Freight being ABOVE BOARD and YOU being a scammer.
Plus you screwed yourself NOT getting the warrenty, then they COULD have helped you but you went cheap.
Basically you have shown yourself to be a scammer, a whiner, a thief, a person with no integrity. Good Job.

Your warranty was for a specific amount of time not the number of uses. There is no way they know if you used the drill 1 time or 1000 times. It is unfortunate that you only got to use it one time, but they are abiding by the terms of the warranty.
On the subject of a Cordless drill, if you are using the drill once or twice a year a Cordless drill may not be your best choice. And while this should be obivous let's see if it falls into the "duh" category. You did attempt to recharge the batteries before you used it in December.
Batteries do not hold their charge forever, and for a cheap drill if they have cheap batteries just charging them up once, using it and putting them away for months at a time could significantly shorten the life of the batteries. This may have even been part of the reason your DeWalt batteries died. You don't mention the "cheap" drill you purchased but I hope you didn't get rid of your DeWalt, because your best move(short of buying a corded drill) is to buy the batteries for that better drill.
As for what you would do, that's great if you take back things out of warranty on the word that the customer only used it once. How about giving us the name of your generous business so we can take advantage of your generosity.
Oh but that still doesn't make it a RipOff if a store decides to hold to the terms of the warranty and deny the exchange.
