This is a warning to Florida residents. HHGregg has opened 4 stores in Florida. You will find complaints on the Internet. Here is my experience: When we moved to Bloomington, Indiana, we bought all of our major appliances from HHGregg. We paid for all of them by check. Our checks had our local Bloomington address, but the bank was out of state. Since our in-state address was on the checks, they considered them to be in-state checks. Since then, we made many purchases and paid for them all by check. None of them were ever questioned. We went to purchase a VHS recorder which was on sale. They were out of the model advertised. The salesman brought us the next higher model, at the same price (which was their advertised policy at the time, and may still be). When we went to check-out, the cashier would not accept the check because it was drawn on an out of state bank. We got the store manager and explained that the checks had always been accepted, with HHGregg's knowledge that they were drawn on an out-of-state bank. The manager would not accept it. It was obvious that the reason for not accepting the check was that they did not want to honor their promise because it would mean a loss on that sale. We went to another store and purchased the VHS recorder. We have not done business with HHGregg since. We wrote to corporate headquarters and never received a reply. I want to do all I can to notify Florida residents to be wary of this company due to my experience and other complaints, some of which can be found on the internet.

i can understand your agrivation. but why if as you stated you have been a cutomer that has been happy up until now would you want to tell customers to stay away. most companies do not take out of state checks for the exact reason stated by kevin. i would sugest getting a local account and not haing to go thru this again.

That policy is newish

The no out-of-state checks policy is kinda new. hhgregg, over the past year or so, has lost millions of dollars to check fraud that uses an in-state address with an out-of-state bank.
The actual policy, though, is that we don't take checks from banks that don't operate in states we do (IN,OH,KY,TN,GA,NC,SC,FL).
I don't see, though, how this breaks a "promise" as hhgregg is by no means the only retailer that does this and has never had a policy where a check written on an out-of-state bank was considered "in-state".
I have personally seen, in my store alone in Indianapolis, tens of thousands of dollars in just the past 5 months lost to check fraud.
I actually just recently helped out at the Sanford store for the grand opening. I think I speak for myself and my fellow hhgregg people who were down there, that the people who work in that store are in for a treat with the genuinely nice, knowledgeable customers that are down there. And I think that, despite this one person who had one bad experience out of many good ones, the Sanford area will enjoy the low prices and great service we offer.
