A couple of years ago I refinanced my car through Household Auto Finance because they offered me lower payments. The payments were somewhat lower and I was OK with them. I made my monthly payments on time and had no problems.
Then in 2003 my car got totaled by a hit and run driver. My spouse who was driving the car was sent to the ER and the car got towed to the wrecker yard. My insurance company got me a rental and paid Household the book value of the car but I owed a small gap (difference) between what State Farm paid and what Household wanted.
I contacted Household by phone to try to get them to cut the debt since I could not obviously continue to make a payment on a car in the wrecker yard AND the new car which I was forced to go out and buy because I needed a vehicle to get to and from work. When I called I got shuffled around to different people and even got cut off. Disgusted, I send an e-mail through Household's website and that was never answered. I even wrote Household using Certified Mail with a return receipt (and so I know they got the letter) explaining the situation, but no one responded.
I finally got one woman at Household to refinance the loan to lower the payments, which she did but then when I got my "new" bills they included "Impound Fees" added to them. I again contacted Household to get clarification as to what the so-called Impound Fees were but they refused to answer.
Then I got a call from a rude, sarcastic and pushy Household collector who asked me how I paid bills and why it was "inconvenient" for me to "do the right manly thing" and pay my bills. I tried to explain the situation to him but he kept cutting me off and getting nastier so I terminated the conversation. I also got in trouble for using company lines for a personal conversation so I told Household not to call me at work again.
I continued to receive bills including more and more Impound Fees and finally decided I had had enough and quit responding or trying to contact them. If they refinanced the loan and decided to add more and more "Fees" to the so-called "refinanced" loan then refused to answer why then I figured the heck with them.
Household has been totally uncooperative and unsupportive in light of having had my spouse injured in the accident, having lost income as a result of the accident, and having to buy a new car at a higher payment than what I was already making to Household in the first place. I can't make TWO car payments obviously, and our domestic budget has been strained to the point that making our bills has become a stretch. Now Household is threatening "legal action." How do these people sleep at night???

Hi Joseph. I too have some of these same issues currently with HAFC. My car was totaled in March 2004 and as of today July 28, 2004 I have not gotten any satisfaction from this company concerning my pay off amount. After the first couple of months the insurance company ran out of patience trying to close the claim. They contacted me last month and asked if they could talk to HAFC and get a reasonable payoff amount. HAFC wants a payoff for a little more than $1000 than the insurance was ready to pay for. HAFC quoted the insurance company a payoff that was $1100 less than they were demanding I pay to them. The main reason I was upset about payoff is because no matter when I paid off the account the amount was the same. I have never heard of any company that required the complete payoff when loan is paid out 32 months early.
So now they are asking me to pay the difference that the insurance failed to pay.
So now I still owe for a car that I have paid on for almost 4 years and am without any car because of it.
After dealing with most of the issues you wrote about I decided to go over my contract with a fine toothed comp. They sent me a printout of my payment history which left off the first year of payments. In addition to that I began paying $350 dollars monthly at the beginning of my note. After a year and a half they lowered my monthly payments to $259.00 because of a finacial hardship. Well the printout shows all payments billed were for $259.00 including the payments that were made prior to the change. So that is good proof that the original printout was altered to show I owed more. I show some payments were credited and then voided with no explanation. Also I was charged more than $600.00 listed as other charges. No explanation was given for what other charges refered to. After going over my contract I found they were never entitled to these charges and these charges were not disclosed any where on my contract.
I know this was rather long, but I just wanted you to go back over your original contract and search for any hidden charges paid on your account. Good luck with the outcome.

Household is wanting me to pay up the difference

I've been asked about how I'm driving a NEW car after my old one was totaled and the insurance company paid Household for it.
Explanation: Due to refinancing, I owed more on the old (totaled) car than what the insurance company paid Household. I had to go out and buy another car but I couldn't afford a new one so I had to settle for a used one. So...my "new" car is one year newer than the totaled one but it's still a used car. Now this car is needing repairs that are out of warranty since it was sold "As Is" and there's no money in the budget for it.
Household is wanting me to pay up the difference between the book value paid by the insurance company and declined a humanitarian reduction in the loan since I'm now making payments on my present car.
They (Household) are now threatening "legal action" to recover. I can't afford a lawyer and if they sue me and win, there's nothing for them to take. Waste of time? You bet. Nuisance? Big time!
