On January 31st, my husband and I went into our local H&R Block office in Portage, Michigan. We had our taxes filed by a Tina Harker. We applied for the RAL and accepted the $46.95 fee to have our taxes back fast. Needless to say our RAL was denied by HSBC bank, and they kept our finance fee. That was just the begining.
I felt that something wasn't right with our taxes so I ran them through on Turbo Tax online and came up with a return of over $1,000 more than H&R gave us. Our State was also messed up. She gave us $17 and I came up with over $650.

I called the Crossroads Office back and explained that I thought maybe there was a mistake with our taxes and wanted to know if I could set up an appointment to have them gone over again just to make sure. I was treated VERY rudely by a Senior tax adviser, who was Tina's boss and she said she has done taxes for over 15 years and goes over EVERY one of Tina's files to make sure they are correct.

I then called the office on Westnedge, and my husband and I took our paperwork in and met with a Michael Miller. He was very nice and went over our paperwork with us. He immediately found the mistake that I thought was there. He found us an additional $1,137 for federal (which 2 months later we are still waiting to recieve) as well as over $600 for state (which is pending review untill 11/2008)

Now according to their Maximum refund garuntee shouldn't we be reimbursed our $314 filing fees????? I asked Michael and he said he would contact the district supervisor and she/he would get back to me. (This was on Feb. 9th 2008)

On April 10th I contacted the main H&R Block Office and tried to file a complaint there. They took all my information and told me they would forward it to the district supervisor in my area. It is now April 18th and I have yet to hear from this "district supervisor". I am more than just a little angry. If they make this garuntee then they should be made to stand by it.

I am going to contact the main office again on Monday, April 21st, and if I get the run around again I am contacting Mike Cox, Michigan State Attorney General.
H&R Block should be put out of business, in my honest opinion. They make themselves out to sound so great, and reassuring to us the consumer just so they can slap us in the face first chance they get. I will NEVER use H&R again, which I have used for 10 out of the last 12 years. Either (((competitor's name redacted))) will have my business or my taxes will be done by ME.

Tax Preparers are Rip-offs

AUTHOR: Bryce - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, April 19, 2008

These tax preparers are sad and unnecessary. Why should you have to pay a private third party in order to fulfill your duties as a citizen? Just like you said, you did better doing your taxes yourself, and most anyone will. The best way to MAXIMIZE YOUR REFUND is to do them yourself and save the preparer's fee. It's such a frenzy this time of year that they don't even have time to concentrate on problems. Most of the people I know that have their taxes prepared only see $$$$ and don't even take the time to review their taxes or think about how or if they should be getting more than the figure the preparer shot out for them. This is where the tax preparers make out like bandits. Crank out those refunds, and when they get a complaint or serious problem, say "hey, I can do 20 refunds in the time it would take me to really take care of this one account. I think I will rake in 20 more fees and piss that one client off. I'll make more that way."
I do my own taxes, and have for years even when I had to do them longhand on paper forms. Of course, these past two years, I have used the Indiana website to do my state taxes. This is their website, where I plug in the numbers and their program take care of the calculations. These past two years, I have received notification the refund I was supposed to receive "did not match their calculations." They simply state the difference and say I can contest it if I choose. They already know what I owe. The government should be able to tell you that you owe X amount, and to please take your deductions from that amount. Of course, they won't be aware of your deductions, but if they would provide you with a starting figure and you took your deductions, it would be a lot easier for a person to be in the right ballpark and be assured the numbers at least looked right. But what the lawyer on TV says about insurance companies is also true about the IRS: "Deny your claim, Delay your Claim, Defend your Claim."
