Do NOT buy a ticket from Jet Blue Airlines. If you need to cancel, they will charge you $25 dollars and KEEP the rest of your money as a 'credit'. I purchased a ticket online for my nephew last weekend and paid by credit card. Later that day, he informed me that the departing airport was 4 hours away. Fine, I told him, I'll just cancel the flight and book another one at a closer airport. When I went to cancel the flight, also online, JetBlue charged me $25 dollars. I thought that was alright, since I cancelled a seat. Later on, during the week, I noticed that the charge wasn't being credited back to my card. When I called JetBlue, a rep told me that they only give JetBlue credits for any future flights I may wish to take with them. I told her that I don't fly and I have no plans to fly anytime soon, especially on JetBlue so I would appreciate my card being credited. She told me that they can't do that. I called my credit card company and they are handling the dispute. How in the hell are you going to just KEEP my money when I am NOT using your services? I cancelled the flight well before the scheduled departure date. If my credit card company doesn't remedy this situation, I'm taking JetBlue to small claims court. They are a TOTAL rip-off. Choose another airline.

You should have checked with your nephew and made sure which airport was closest to him first. I do not do a lot of traveling now, but I used to several years ago when my daughter was a competitive gymnast. We always made sure we had our travel days in advance because we knew that once we bought them we could not get our money back. We usually flew Southwest and occasionally we would get at the airport and they would get us on a earlier flight and not charge us, but beyond that.......we knew what we bought is what we flew! There is no ripoff, you are just mad that you did not have all your facts straight with your nephew before you spent your money. Next time line up your facts before you spend your money.

Southwest DOES NOT charge for a cancellation

They allow you to use the cost of the ticket for travel within a year from the time you bought the ticket. This is on a non-refundable ticket. On my last trip with Southwest I made a mistake on line with the date of the return flight. I immediately called and they changed the date at no cost since fares were the same. On other airlines I would be charged $100 for the change. Customer Service answered on the second ring .Why anybody flies any other airline is beyond me.
The other commenters are right though. Non-refundable mesans exactly what it says.

I would like to also mention to the individual above saying that Southwest doesn't charge for a cancellation fee. This is actually misdeseving, They don't if you buy one of their regular priced tickets. However, they also offer a cheaper option in which is usally cheaper than any other flights you'll find, that are non-refundable. I've seen people make this same complaint that airlines won't refund their money for cancellation and I always ask, "what does Nonrefundable mean to you?"

Non refundable tickets

Obviously you purchased a non refundable ticket. Common sense dictates that you will not get your money back if you cancel your ticket.
That being said, when purchasing a nonrefundable ticket, it is absolutely imperative that you know EXACTLY what your travel dates are going to be, as well as EXACTLY what your departing and arriving airports are going to be. As you found out, you cannot make changes later.
Is this a rip off? Absolutely not! You willingly purchased a nonrefundable ticket on your own free will, when you DID have the option to purchase a full fare refundable ticket but chose not to. The onus is on you.

Yes choose another airline

Obviously you don't get fly much. JetBlue's policy is actually pretty decent.
First of all, no airline will actually refund your money, unless you purchase a refundable ticket, which is substantially more expensive.
Second, $25 is pretty reasonable, $50-$100 is the norm, although I believe Southwest doesn't charge anything. But that's pretty unusual.
I'd suggest next time you need to buy an airline ticket, do yourself a favor and buy a bus ticket.
