My son was served on June 19, 2013 for a medical bill for rehabilitation. He lives in Montana but that didn't matter and I was given the document. I called Monday morning and was told they couldn't speak with me. Then I got permission to speak with them and offered the original amount of the medical bill. I was told by the 'paralegal' that they would submit it. At that time I was told we could pay $723 to resolve the bill. I was prepared to do that but at the same time the representative told me that she would submit my offer to the client. That was Wednesday the 26th. I called back several times and was told they hadn't heard from their client. I went to the insurance carrier to find out what had happened and why it wasn't paid. They told me it was part of the deductible which had not been met. My son is 23 and has no money. So the policy was in m husband's name and we've been divorced 3 years. In any event, I hadn't heard from Johnson Mark on Thursday the 27th and called them. I was told they hadn't heard from their client. Then I went to the client Friday and was told that they didn't receive any offers or the girl who have known was in the conference room. So I went back today Monday and was told they don't deal with it once it goes to collection. I said is their not an intermediary between them and the lawyer. They said their lawyer was Johnson Mark LLC. In any event the person I first spoke with was talking in a hurried fashion, was highly hurrying me along, and told me that a filing fee had been added. I tried to get anywhere with him and ended up angry. So I called back again and spoke with another person. I told her I didn't agree with the filing fee, and asked why nonone had got back to me with my offer. Then she told me her client did not accept any settlements at all. I had agreed to set up a payment plan for the 799$. Then she put me on hold and told me that she had to ask her supervisor if I could do that without a lawyer's fee. I told her I could pay it this month. Then she told me it was going to be $1000 plus.

I am not sure

I am not sure that this could be done... What I think you may try is to directly contact the hospital or whatever institute that you owe the money to, and try to make a deal with them directly. It may cut the legal cost. Usually, this type of law firms will take debtors from the pool, and then attempt to collect the debt by their own. They will get a portion of money they collect from the creditor. Therefore, the filing fees are the "free" money they are getting besides the commission they are getting. Just a thought for you.
