The problem with kmart.
Over the past few months I have read a lot of the complaints on here about kmart and there are some things that I agree with and other things that I don't agree with. I am an employee of Kmart and I have been one for over a year. I do believe that there are a lot of problems with kmart or at least the store I work at I can't speak other stores because I do not know about them. I think the root of all the problems that I see and the people who have complained on this site comes from poor management. I am not saying that all of Kmart's managers are bad but I am saying that one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch.
I believe that Kmart, Sears Holding Company, recognizes the management problem and is now trying to fix it by bringing in military trained people to be store managers. I been around one of the military persons that was being trained to be a store manger and I loved the way the person though about things and know that person will do a great job at managing whatever ever store they get. Kmart starts its employees out with $7.50/hr which I am told is more than what Wal-Mart pays. I mention how much kmart pays to say that quality costs and if we want more quality employees then you have to pay for it. While $7.50 is not that bad it is not enough to draw some one who may be an expert in gardening, electronics, sporting goods, automotive, hardware, etc. All the things I just mentioned are departments within kmart. Since kmart pays its employees what it does I don't think customer should get upset if they go and buy a TV and the associate in the electronics does not know everything about TVs. That person was probably hired to be a cashier and not because he or she was an electronics expert. Now there are some stores like Radio Shack, Circuit City, etc which specialize in electronics so then one of their requirements when they hire some one is probably that they have a certain amount of knowledge about electronics. I am sure specialty stores like circuit city start their employees off at more than $7.50/hr.
Although it is not the customers fault, Kmart does not really training their employees, I have seen people get scheduled t work in the garden center who do not know anything about gardening and who had not training about how to assist customer in the garden center. To make it worst a customer will come in the garden center or other department and ask the cashier something and get mad when they do not know the answer to the question. I do believe that if kmart trained employees before placing them in a particular department they will be able to answer some of the customers questions but no one knows everything.

7.50!?!!

SEVEN FIFTY?! We started at SIX BUCKS. After minimum wage increased, I'm not sure what starting pay is. Probably the minimum of 6.85 or whatever it is. I've worked there for over a year and after my raise I'm still at $7.24 an hour. I don't want to hear about $7.50 being a problem, I would KILL for that much.
Onward now: you are very correct about the lack of training. As a cashier for over a year, I'm still learning how to do things, and teaching others who have been there even longer than I how to do things. Heck, I was put in charge of training people after a MONTH of working there, and still having little idea of how things work. There are also a lot of communication issues with managers, i.e., no two people will tell you the same thing.
Now, that's no reason for someone to be downright rude-- if you've been treated rudely on purpose, that's not a training issue. That's an attitude issue and no amount of training will fix that. However, if you don't agree with store policies, that's not an employee's problem, that's a problem with SHC in general and you'd do better to speak to a district manager than to scream at the cashiers.

You cannot get good employees for $7.50 an hour. This is just common sense.
$7.50 an hour is a disgrace. That is what you pay a high school kid that lives with Mommy and Daddy. this is a wage for a part timer, not a full time person living on their own.
$7.50 an hour is at least $2 an hour under the "living wage" even in Durham N.C.
Any business that cannot pay a living wage should not be in business anyway. And, usually most will fail.

because I never have to search for a parking spot. It's great, I can park really close to the doors and I never have to look further than the first row I drive down for a space. Once inside I can walk around and hardly ever run into anyone. Nobody bugs me, no shopping carts being shoved into me, and the lines are really short at the check out.
Walmart is always packed and I always have to worry about some jerk parking half inside my spot and half inside the next spot, making it really hard to climb back into my car after leaving the store. I always have to park far far away and risk being run over by all the other jerks in the parking lot. Too many people in the store, lines are way too long, little kids running around without parents.. I hate walmart.
So...while it's great for me... I don't know how Kmart feels about it. But for now I am happy. I hope they manage to scrounge up enough business to stick around with walmart just down the street. Even the Kmart shopping center looks pretty down. There are still a few businesses in there, but none that really attract people. Alot of the bigger ones, like payless, moved into the new walmart shopping center.
Down with walmart....yay for Kmart.
But then again, I don't want everyone else shopping at Kmart, it's like my little secret!

I am also a Kmart employee for just over a year in Michigan. I see the most glaring problem with our daily operations to be a lack of investment within our own company. We rarely have more than two associates on our entire floor at any given time to assist customers whatsoever, and training is not offered for any department.
Also, how much can one really expect from an employee making 7.50/hr and being scheduled a mere 8-10 hours per week? I find myself sometimes exhausted at the end of my shifts because I try to "cover" the store for lack of customer assistance. In a given day I will be responsible for the service desk, the checkouts, all breaks and lunches, providing shopping carts, and the list goes on and on.
The store i work at is doing well in a market with a WalMart, Target and Miejers within a mile of it. The one constant is that there is just no customer assistance available. I have seen, many times, a customer park a full shopping cart and exit the store because there was no-one to help them retrieve an item from a high shelf or something of that nature.
No matter the quality of employee you may have, a person can only do so much! Eventually, like myself now, a good employee will tire and look for employment elsewhere.
I am deeply loyal to Kmart, it is my favorite childhood memories to go there with my Grandmother! Unfortunately, the store is a sinking ship if the owners/investors dont invest in their own stores and make them pleasant to shop at.
Lastly, any Kmart I have been in is in serious need of updating!!Most checkout lanes are using equipment older than many of the workers, hence the trouble with improper ringing and delays dutring checkouts. I would love to hear ideas from other employees and hopefully allwyn lewis or Don Germano will read something and develop some insight of the common man!!!

The reason my family gave up on kmart a long time ago is their inability to price items correctly, especially those in the weekly sales flyer. 9 times out of 10 we would go to get something on sale it would not ring up for the price in the flyer. That was not just at one location, but at least 3 in Virginia.
That gets old after a while. Don't have that at Walmart or Target.
