LA Boxing Will not cancel my contract until fees are paid, they will not stop charging fees unless I have cancelled my membership Costa Mesa, California

In 2010 I was broke, but I used my tax return to buy a year long membership to LA Boxing. I thought it was safe because I have been a member of LA Boxing in the past. All in all I have been a member for 7 years and paid $600.00 a year. Shortly after I signed my contract I hurt my patella. I used the gym around 8 times. I wasn't sure when I could recieve physical therapy so I asked them to suspend my membership. They told me there is a monthly fee for this. Even then I could not oblidge because I was a student and living off the megar rationings of gov financial aid. I asked them to cancel the membership. They "suposedly" did.  Fast Forward a year later. I recieved a letter in the mail saying I owe for 2 months because my credit card they were using was maxed out and cancelled.  I called them and explained...I have no job or income right now. I can barely afford rent, and I cant even buy my diabetes medication...there is no way I can pay you right now. I promise to get to this bill when I get on my feet. They said they can not cancel my account until I am up to date on balances. I said that I can't pay any balances. They said that I will continue to acrue fees monthly fees. This doesnt seem right to me...Is it even legal.
