Deceptive practices 1/2off lenses. What a crock!

I purchased my Frames (149.99) & lenses($375). I gave them my insurance card. They said it is POLICY, "you cannot get the 1/2 off AND use your insurance, it's an either OR situation". NO WHERE do they have that in writing. I specifically asked them to see that policy in writing, they didn't have it!! They told me to call they're main office on Boynton Beach, FL The Optician said it is their policy and has always been that way. I told him the LAW said they have to post their policy to enforce it!!!

Isn't that breaking the Consumers laws, the very laws that say they must be specific and show the verbiage where the consumer can see it??

Google Lenscrafters, you will see how many people are complaint. I am calling and filing a complaint against them with Consumer affairs.

FORMER RETAIL-GONE PRIVATE

AUTHOR: Jerry - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, February 09, 2005

I am a former employee of a large retail optical business- (over 10 years when i quit) and own my own local shoppe now. When i was with the " big" company, it had a 3 inch thick policy book. If it was law to post all our policies, i bet we could coat all the walls with just the policies!

Your "expectations" of what is to be done and what the LAW is are 2 different things, unfortunately. As much as i hate to side with the "big" optical retailers, i believe they have done little wrong, other than how they could have remedied the situation, but don't think YOU - the customer, would be happy, once YOU got the idea in YOUR head how THEY were breaking the law. If they truly broke the law, then i guess you are safe to spend the money & hire a lawyer (although i doubt you will). Glad to say , i have been on my own (small optical shoppe-privately owned) for over 3 years and have over 15 years experience in the trade. Good luck to you finding an office who bends over backwards as you might expect....PS. i am much cheaper than Lenscrafters

#14 UPDATE EX-employee responds

I beg to differ.

AUTHOR: Amy - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, January 19, 2005

I am a former employee of Lenscrafters as well. I have more than 10 years optical experience. I have worked for both retail giants and private doctor's offices. In all of my years in the optical (and retail) business I have never heard of any "law" that says a business must provide a double discount. I also am not aware of any law that requires a business to post every single policy that could affect every possible transaction that takes place.
I also recall that if Lenscrafters did not take your insurance, as a courtesy they extended (voluntarily I might add) a 20% discount.
The store that I worked in had an excellent staff that was commited to cutomer service. Not only did we treat minorities the same as everyone else, (we had minorites represented on our staff by the way) I never recall "avoiding" any paying customers regardless of posession of insurance or not.
At the time we also had a superb store manager that balanced the needs of the consumer with the companies sales requirements (they are in business to make a profit as well as serve the needs of the customers, are they not?). Many times I saw him cheerfully refund the money of customers like Ms Theresa who could not be pleased by anyone or anything.
All consumers should remember that you get what you pay for. While Lenscrafter's prices are higher than some retailers, they usually beat the prices of private doctors offices. Also, they can make glasses for almost anyone in 1 hour, and this is guaranteed.
So the next time you pass a Lenscrafters store, remember , they are on the list of the top 100 companies to work for. They could not hold such a prestigous honor unless they were doing somthing right.

What spiffs??

AUTHOR: Katrina - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, January 14, 2005

I currently work for Lenscrafters and trust me, the "spiffs" that I recieve have very little indentations in my paycheck! I have sold over $4000 of glasses in a week and recieved under $50 for it. I have worked for this company for 6 years and I apologize that the employees in the named store could not find a copy of the policies. On every single poster throughout the store, if you read the print on the bottom, it says on there that the current promotion cannot be used with other sales or promotions.
Lastly, Theresa, I would like to recommend that you go to a private optical shop and check out what discounts you'll be getting with your insurance...oh that's right, none.

It's a sales game!!! They don't care about your eyes!!!

AUTHOR: I Hate - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 23, 2004

I worked there when I was in college. Everyone is force to maintain an "average sales price" for glasses. If you don't keep these sales up you are written up and eventually fired. If you have insurance, forget about obtaining adequate help; they will avoid you like the plague. This is due to the fact that if you co-pay is only $25 then it is averaged into their average sales. That is unless you purchase sunglasses in which they make an extra bit of commission on the sale. If you are a minority beware!!!! They will automatically assume you have insurance.

NEXT TIME YOU ARE IN A LENSCRAFTERS ASK THE PERSON WHO HELPS YOU WHAT THEIR "SPIFF" WILL BE IF THEY SELL YOU TWO PAIRS!!!! BETTER YET ASK FOR A SPECIAL ORDER AND YOU WILL TRULY REALIZE HOW INCOMPETENT THEY ARE!!!!

Policy vs. Law, a multi-billion dollar company with a bright, competent legal department.

AUTHOR: Glen - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, November 14, 2004

I believe that Sebastian is 100 percent correct (on all points).

Not being an expert on law (unlike others who use this forum), I am somewhat certain that there is no law requiring opticals to post their policy on the use of insurance with sale items. By law, Lenscrafters has to have fire extinguishers and exit lights but when and how they except insurance with discounts, I don't think so.

In your defense, it can be frustrating if you go to a store expecting to receive two discounts only to find that you can only use one. If you feel strongly that it was improper, then it is certainly reasonably for you to voice your opinion to Lenscrafters.

That said, most reasonable people would know that double-discounts are not usually accepted anywhere and wouldn't require that it be posted in order for it to be considered official. For example, Lenscrafters has a policy of not allowing customers to spit on the floor and that's not posted anywhere either. It's common sense not to spit on the floor.

What do you expect Lenscrafters to do? You said in your original complaint that they told you they wouldn't accept insurance in addition to a half off sale. OK. Go somewhere else. Nowhere else will accept double discounts and I'd wager that it will not be posted in their store either. The best advice I can give is to try to relax (breathing slowly will help).

As far as your assertion that posting such policies is the law...

Lenscrafters is a multi-billion dollar company with a bright, competent legal department. I seriously doubt they'd break that law if it really existed.

Glen

Visionworks- same thing

AUTHOR: Sebastian - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, November 12, 2004

I'm an Optician at Visionworks. They have the same policy. On their ads they state no other discounts are eligible for their sales and it says see associate for details. It's not just Lenscrafters. Most people don't have an issue with this. If someone wants to know if they can use their insurance with the sale they will always ask and we will tell them and they will then make a decision and it's end of story. Nobody gets upset like Ms. Theresa unless they forgot to take their medication that day.

Well, not really... Lenscrafters can't give you more than one discount at a time, no obligation to ever give your money back

AUTHOR: Glen - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, November 05, 2004

When Lenscrafters signs-on to provide for an insurance company, they also agree to give a discount in addition to what your insurance pays Lenscrafters (Just call your insurance company and ask them). It's also possible that your insurance is only a discount program (most are).

Lenscrafters can't give you more than one discount at a time (sort of like giving them several coupons and getting free glasses- can't do that).

Not to mention the fact that you had plenty of opportunity to just leave before you paid them (since half off your lenses wasn't good enough). AND, if you buy the glasses anyway and change your mind later, Lenscrafters still gives you 30 days to get your money back! Hardly a rip off.

By law, they have no obligation to ever give your money back, just ask Consumer Affairs when you call.

NOT GOOD ENOUGH

AUTHOR: Theresa - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 02, 2004

Most people don't have a laptop with them to check the web-site. This verbiage MUST be at the POS (Point of Sale!)..Which it is not, this is the LAW .
The workers at this particular Lenscrafters (Pembroke Pine & Palm Ave , Pembroke Pines, Florida) could not produce ONE shred of POLICY!! If yhe consumer askd to see it in writing, THEY have to produce it!
In this instance, the consumer wins.

It is truly BAIT & SWITCH
