I purchased a package that included air, hotel and car rental through Orbitz for my father-in-law's funeral. Class of car through Alamo was economy. I was told by an Orbitz agent that, if I desired, I would be able to upgrade the car when I picked it up. Here is what I feel is a gouging practice. When I upgraded the car from economy to standard, Alamo charged me $244.93 for 9 days. Now I'm not sure what Orbitz paid for the car rental portion of the package but when I checked Alamo's own web site the rate for 9 days for a standard car was $210.79 and an economy car was $165.79, a difference of $45.00. No one at Orbitz could explain why I was charged a difference of $244.93.
Especially with the upcoming Memorial Day holiday, all vets beware of ALAMO & ORBITZ.

#3 Consumer Suggestion
Alamo should not be compared with Orbitz.

Now you learnt a lesson. Orbitz, travelocity, expedia, priceline and fraudsters alike make their monies by cheating the consumer, then kicking them real hard.
I never make car reservations through these imbeciles. I don't trust them. I am a loyal customer of Alamo and National and I appreciate how they handle the reservations. They never let me down. Not once.
Now if you reserve an economy class and decide to upgrade at the time you pick up the car you just wrote your own sentence. At the counter you always pay more than what you've been quoted online, even for an upgrade. It's their policy. Do your homework and you'll be happy.
Alamo is by far the best and most affordable car rental company in US. That's why you go to them directly. As a frequent traveler I am loyal to one airline and one rental car company. I always manage to get the best rates and fare.
The secret is: I don't use orbitz, travelocity and the other members of the street gang for my travel needs. But, they are a good source for comparing rates. The only time I used Orbitz' services was to buy a plane ticket on Hawaiian Airlines since the fare quoted by Orbitz was lower than the fare displayed on HA website. Everything went Ok.
You have yet to mess with priceline.com. Those I hear are even worse.
So don't blame Alamo. Blame the system.

Carl, sorry for any misunderstanding regarding the vehicle upgrade. Upgrading a rental vehicle may change the price beyond what was quoted through a third-party booking site (in this case Orbitz). We suggest asking at the counter what that additional upgrade price would be - keeping in mind that rates may vary depending on the date & times you rented versus checking online at a later date & time.
I see that Orbitz has commented here as well and should you need further assistance after speaking with them, please let us know.
You may email care[at]alamo.com with your full name, rental agreement or reservation number and the location where you rented.
If emailing please list reference # 100525-004044 in the subject line.
