I need some assistance. I was contacted by P. Scott Lowery's Law office this month about a debt that I owed to HSBC. I affirmed the debt because I do want to pay it but they are asking for amounts that I am not able to send. I hadnt even recieved the letter at the time the lady called and requested that they do not contact me until I recieved the letter. They continuously badgered me to give them my account information to set up auto-drafts but I did not want to do that. I gave them my account info to set up drafts for May 30 but the account has since been closed and I know they will be calling back once they realized the debit will be returned.
I want to pay this debt but I cannot afford to give them the money they are asking for at this time. They even suggested I not pay a bill so that I could pay them. I am barely making ends meet as is. What can I do. I dont want them to freeze my accounts or cause havoc on my job as I work in the financial industry but I am at my wits end with this.

They cannot freeze your bank account or garnish wages at the drop of a hat....to do this, they need to serve you a summons for a court date....and on that court date they need to win a judgment...only then would they have such power of you.
You did the right thing but canceling your checking account. Giving a debt collector your checking account info ALWAYS leads to trouble...like their taking out more than you authorize.
