My OBGYN ordered Ashkenazi Jew genetic testing when I got pregnant because of my heritage.

I gave blood to Quest Diagnostics for all the genetic tests and they didn't mention anything about how much it might cost.

Several months later Quest send me a bill for over $7,000, which they say is my personal responsibility. My insurance company AETNA doesn't want to pay Quest's ridiculous prices, so Quest just sends me the bill.

I called Quest and asked them to work with me to discount the bill because I know these prices are inflated and because I can't pay that much money. My doctor told me that patients after me were being charged much lower prices by Quest for the same tests. When I talked to a Quest representative, she just said that prices change and that they already discounted my costs and there's nothing they can do. She urged me to pressure AETNA, which I did but they still don't want to cover the costs either.

This is a total ripoff because Quest is doing "balance billing", which in many states is illegal. They're taking advantage of the fact that patients are confused and don't want their credit ruined and they're charging them outrageous balances because they don't want to work with the insurers.

I refuse to pay Quest this amount and I will most likely be hiring a lawyer if Quest doesn't find a way to work with me and discount my bill.

Tyg, it makes me sad to see how intolerant and foolish you are.

Please read my previous post and take the advice to heart.

This is a FREE country

Jim,

To be honest, I have absolutely no problem with anyone saying whatever they want. People are free to express their opinions. But when someone is being offensive without offering any constructive solution or advice just because that somehow makes them feel better about themselves or because they have nothing better to do with their time, then it's a complete waste of cyber space. But hey, feel free to write a novel with as many nasty words and comments you want, it doesn't bother me a bit.

I posted my case because I want other people to learn from it since, if you've read the other posts about Quest, I'm not the only one having similar issues. For example, just today I found out that Quest duplicated 2 of the tests on my invoice, which resulted in them charging me extra $3K, which they shouldn't have. My insurance specifically stated "You shouldn't pay this" in the Explanation of Benefits and now Quest is reviewing the charges.

So, guys, please refrain from taking sides without knowing the full story. The fault is always on both sides. And if Quest was so righteous in their practices, why are there so many class action lawsuits against them?

And just for the record, I have an MBA degree and do a pretty high-level intelligence job. So calling me ignorant is a personal insult to me and only speaks to the ignorance and narrow-mindedness of the author of such statements. But of course I'm open to hearing from everyone, even those among us whose life is being defined by bullying and vilifying people on the Net about issues that they have nothing to contribute to.

Thank you all!

Hey original author, in case you haven't bother to even read the terms of the website, this is a PUBLIC website.  If YOU don't like it when somebody hits the nail on the head then YOU shouldn't be posting here. Furthermore, if you are so concerned about ethnic heritage and pregnancy, then YOU should have been responsible. Two words are operative here.  GROW UP!

Who's Ignorant? - To Tyg

AUTHOR: - ()

POSTED: Tuesday, March 31, 2015

Tyg,

Thank you so much for your "classy" comment.

If you're going to call other people ignorant, look at yourself first and the nasty writing style you have.

You don't know all the details of my situation and you're so quick to call me ignorant and a scammer??!!!

I'm not upset because I have to pay my medical costs, of course some of them are my responsibility. But when I'm not being charged fairly, I have the right to complain and seek justice. And if it turns out that other people in my situation had to pay the same, then I'll at least have a peace of mind. But who are you to call me a scammer when all I'm doing is looking for answers after seeing that other people have been in similar situations.

And as far as calling my insurance, they told me what they would cover or not cover. However, noone tells you in advance how much the tests actually cost. As a matter of fact, Aetna gave me much lower costs for these tests. How in the world would I have known how much Quest would decide to charge???

So when Quest overcharges other people, it's OK but my case is different to you? If you aee filthy rich and money is no issue to you, then you can be outraged. But for most normal people a $7K lab bill is significant when I know they put 600-700% markup on their tests.

If you can't be helpful or even decent, keep your comments to yourself.

scammer...

So what YOU are saying is that BECAUSE Qwest wants to be paid for the tests that YOU needed that somehow MAGICALLY makes THEM the monster and YOU less of a scammer?? How does that work exactly? Qwest did the work in GOOD FAITH!! YOU needed the tests. YOUR insurance company REFUSES to pay it. Which tells us ALL that YOU didn't check with YOUR insurance company BEFORE having the test done. So it IS your responsibility and Qwest would do well to take YOU to court for DEFAMATION!!! Qwest IS THE VICTIM!!!! YOU are trying to SCAM THEM into giving YOU a lower price on a service that has ALREADY been performed. Then YOU threaten THEM online with a legal issue THAT YOU ARE CAUSING!!! Great way to show not only how cheap and sleezy YOU are but to show that YOU are NOT as responsible as YOU like to think YOU are. YOU have to take the fight to YOUR insurance company. Qwest DID NOTHING WRONG!!!! YOU are trying to BLACKMAIL them into giving YOU a lower price. YOU ARE A SCAMMER!!!! I hope beyond all hope that Qwest DOES take YOU on. It would be refreshing to see someones IGNORANCE punished. YOU are an ignorant fool who is trying to play games and its going to backfire on YOU. YOU are the CRIMINAL!!!! Then YOU accuse them of a crime and have the NERVE to state they are doing it in YOUR case!!! Is "Balanced Billing" Illegal in YOUR state? If not then YOU have done nothing but show your ignorance yet again!! Get over yourself there PRINCESS!!! Life has COSTS. THIS is the cost of getting pregenant and being YOUR particular race. YOUR doctor said YOU needed it. If YOU didn't do YOUR part and contact YOUR insurance agency then YOU are the one at fault AND responsible for the bill.
