Earlier this year I requested and received 2 coupons for the DTV Converter Boxes. The only stores listed where they could be purchased were Wal-Mart and Radio Shack. My dated coupons had to be used by June 2008.

After many trips to both stores I was given no hope of having the stock in stores. Radio Shack finally said if I would pay $59.95 each instead of $49.95 each they would order and send them to me. I paid the price and received the boxes.

I feel ripped off. Was this a fair deal?

Fair Pricing

AUTHOR: Reality_Check - (USA)

POSTED: Saturday, September 05, 2009

In the wonderful world of electronics, every company puts out their own version of everything.  Radio Shack did not choose the price of the converter boxes, Direct Digital (the makers of the converter box, which was the one you saw in those commercials broadcasting the digital switch) determines the manufacturers retail price.  Tests have shown that Direct Digital put out a more reliable box than those other companies you all know like Magnavox, Sony, etc.  Who wouldn't pay a little more for a better product? AND since Radio Shack is becoming the only store (excluding online dealers) that is continuing to sell the boxes, don't complain.  Aside from that, you wouldn't NEED a box if you had cable, or an HDTV, digital is the way it is, so if you insist on still living in the dark ages of technology, you gotta pay.

Regular Price

The regular price of the converter boxes at Radio Shack is $59.99. You did not pay anything extra to have them shipped.

Here is the link to the converter boxes at RadioShack.com: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3150939

If anything, you should be happy that Radio Shack gave you free shipping.

Why just RS and WM?

AUTHOR: Flynrider - (U.S.A.)

When I got my coupons earlier this year, they did not state that I had to buy the converter at a particular retailer. There are several other national retailers selling eligible DTV boxes, including Best Buy, Circuit City, Kmart, Sears and Target. There are also more than 38 Online retailers. There's a list of them at www.dtv2009.gov.

The supplies of coupon eligible boxes is sometimes spotty, so you have to call around. I was able to find them for $49 at Walmart, but I had to call a few of them to verify that they were in stock.

Whether or not you were ripped off is up to you to decide. You paid an extra $10/box to have them shipped to you, instead of having to shop around. To some people, the extra money would be worth it to avoid the hassle.
