Christmas morning my laptop was working fine and then it went black, telling me I had several viruses. A Security Company website came up on monitor, forcing me to purchase product (wouldn't let me cancel even though there was a cancel button) to get rid of viruses. The product was supposed to be a 2 year service for $49.95. After purchasing it the supposed viruses disappeared.
This morning I received a call from my credit card company asking if I purchased something yesterday for $99.95. I told them no and told them I had purchased something for $49.95. The guy from the credit card company said something about real gold soft and mcafee.
I tried calling mcafee, giving them all my credit card info and they said they couldn't find any of my information. I looked up real gold soft on internet and the first thing that came up was Rip-Off Report and sure enough others have had the same problem as I have.
I called my credit card company several times to dispute the charge, being told I would have to wait for statement to show up before I am able to dispute the charge. Finally, after many phone calls to the credit card company, I was put through to a very helpful woman who said they would tag the charge and that I shouldn't see it on my next bill. However, if I do, I'm supposed to ask for fraud report from them to dispute it again.
Mean while, I have canceled that card and asked to get a new one.
Thanks for this website. I know how frustrated everyone must feel having to go through this.

Giveing them your card info was a very bad idea, you should never give out your card to a company or person that seems to be fishy and a program taking over your computer is very fishy. Everything you did after that combined with using a credit card and having a good credit card company was good though.
What you experienced is Mal-ware (Malicious Software), this form of malware takes over your opperating system after it uploads you it's Trojan virus (virus disguised as a normal file you decided to download). Once it has a hold of your computer it blocks you from doing just about anything and displays a phony virus report and says you need to use their anti-virus softare to remove it. What SHOULD have alerted you is the fact that the second you noticed a problem they showed up say "Hey we can fix this", but this jupes allot of people into giving them money to fix it but the thing is, if this company is puting a virus on your computer then you obviously cant trust them with your credit card info.
I'm posting this so you understand how this happens and what to do about it. For starters be cautious of what you download. Second ensure you have a good anti-virus but most importantly a dependable firewall (program that blocks anything attempting to change your computer untill it alerts you and asks if you should allow it or not) there are some free anti-virus/firewall programs that offer free versions that are dependable. I recommend not using McAfee, they are the reason I know all of this since I was infected with something simular to this while using McAfee's firewall, I now use Comodo internet security. If you happen to be infected with something like this there are a few resources on the internet with people that know viruses and how to eliminate them, one I use is Daniweb.com, the people there will go through a step by step process and tell you how to eliminate the infection without purchasing any other software and their service is 100% free.
