i work for RAC in ohio. recently transferred to another store due to an opening that took place. I was placed on a route that had been doing horribly over the past 8 months. it had 4 different account reps on it. including one who was promoted to a "credit manager". In the 8 weeks i have been on that route i have managed to get it to close (company standard 5.9%, our dm standard 4.9%) 5 out of 8 times. my opens, although high in the eyes of my DM... have varied from the low to mid 20's. The route was unmanageable before i took it over, and i have gotten it to hit almost all the numbers and grow. but. i was informed that due to my lack of hitting ALL numbers i was being placed on a 4 week action plan. 2 of those four weeks are holiday weeks. apparently the so called credt manager told our DM that i was a dream to work with and i was oh-so-consistent with my numbers and i always maintained my routes. Which is true. Never a problem. but this guy. my store manager is so far up his but it's not funny. our jobs are constantly being threatened. i've been cussed at, yelled at, called names... treated like a royal sh** bag and this is just by my superiors. I have been with this company since august of 06. i know how to do my job. but i am being treated like i am a rookie that just got doen with training. bets of all. my manager so enjoys taking advantage of the company. he drives the trucks home at night. leaving merch on them that could easily get stolen. but as we all know it would be the fault of the account reps. not his.

so what should be done, besides looking for another job? i'm tired of working with people that don't hold their own. our credit manager will not, i repeat, will not leave the store for anything. he does not run. he does not do money picks. he just sits in the store. thats all.

the only one worth a d**n in our management staff is the sales manager.but he is constantly getting s**t from our dm and the store manager regarding sales even though we average 25 deliveries a week. HELP! stuck in a rut!

#11 UPDATE EX-employee responds

This guy is putting it mildly

When you work in a tight knit group of 5 people in an office or truck cab for 12 hrs a day 6 days a week, upper mngmts best way of controlling you is making you uncomfortable. Its what they do to their customers.
My first day was supposed to be a 1 hour unpaid orientation 50 minutes from where I lived. I got there, and the store mngr was an hour late...the rest of the crew looked like thugs. Very unkempt and not friendly at all.
I ended up being there 5 hours, did a w/d swithchout in a basement by myself. I asked how they could do this without paying me, and they laughed spouting something about "you have to show us youre a team player"
The acct mngr training me acted like denzel in "training day"
It was very bizarre from the beginning, and at first I bought into th cloak and dagger part of the job...the team.
After being made to work 10 extra hours a week with no pay, being forced to beat on doors on xmas eve at 7pm, I one day, walked into the office and said I quit, and I walked out to my car and never went back.
My only regret is that at the time, I wasn't aware of the "slip, trip, fall" clause in workman's comp laws. If you are hurt in any of those 3 incidents, the company cannot deny your claim.

Most RACs are terrible stores. Most employees and past employees complain.
I wish I lived in the area you worked in.

I applied for a job with RAC, listed with my local store, but just 1 day after, I called and was told that the particular local position had been filled, but one was open in the inner city. The hours and the gas cost wasn't worth it, so I declined. I would have gotten the job, I have 15 years of customer service experience.

I am having an issue with my local RAC. It is being handled by an attorney.
I have been renting a stove for almost 2 years. I won't go into it all here- it can be found under something like "Tonawanda Rent A Center breaks FDCPA", on this site.

I find I ab DOUBLY glad I decided not to work for RAC. I have a boarder who is a former RAC employee. He has tld me about their illegal tactics. He was once at home when delivery men came and knocked on the door. I didn't answer. They TRIED TO TURN THE DOORKNOB TO OPEN THE DOOR. My boarder told me that if the door had been nlocked, they would have come in and taken the stove.

Scary. Most RACs are like this.

#6 UPDATE Employee

Its a crazy world.....

AUTHOR: Syskoe - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, March 10, 2008

I am also a RAC employee. I have read all your post and sit here in utter shock! I am currently the sales mgr at my store and have many different opinions about this company than pretty much all of you. Now, please do not get me wrong! I understand that not everyones region/market/store is the same. But I tell you that the people in my store are some of the most honest, and respecting people I have ever met. I was also an account rep for about eight months with RAC.

I wasnt perfect, nor am I now. I struggled sometimes hitting numbers and growing. I was never treated with disrespect or belittled by my market, or store manager. See, the thing that sets people apart isnt the job you do at the current time, its how you handle yourself when your up and when you are down. I guess what I am saying is that not every Rentacenter is so bad. My co-workers take pride in how we treat our customers, how we present ourselves to the community! We offer a service that goes beyond renting and collecting.

Respect to others IS our focus everyday. That goes from the top of our market to the bottom. I would never treat a customer pourly because he or she is going through a rough time! We take every situation we encounter as a chance to build trust with people. That goes for coworkers as well! I know many people get on here to bash my company and i guess some stores may deserve that but please people, REMEMBER that there are a lot of good people in this buisness and in RAC.

Get out fast....RentaCenter is an abusive empolyer

AUTHOR: Ex-employee - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, February 18, 2008

I had not 8 months, BUT EIGHT YEARS, of history with RentaCenter. Your observations are factual and true. You and all employees of this company are working for ruthless people with NO respect for the front-line staff that makes them money. 5 different states, 17 stores, and multiple management positions entails my past history with RAC.

Don't be stupid enough to think it will change-IT WILL NOT !!!!!

Lets be real here, who would want to work with a company that says thy have quality merchandise and then ends up sending cockroach infested product to a new customers house after they "refurb" it...RESPECT THE CONSUMER___I THINK NOT !!!!
What company works their employees off the clock and thinks its ok....Five California lawsuits alone have been won by past employees in the last 8 years for their abusive tactics.
Reality of RentaCenter is produce numbers= profits
Reality of RentaCenter is a political game of who kisses enough A** to leave the store level and become Market, regional, and vp level management.

You would be appaulled to hear the conversations concerning employees at these levels of management. The lawsuits you never hear about are settled out-of-court many times while the company continues to break laws on a daily basis.

I regret working for this greedy company and can only say that since I left " I have my personal integrity back and can be honest with my new emlopyees and customers"

New Jersey will soon the rent-to-own industry with at least 6 other states already having legislation in place to stop the actions of the RTO industry, RentaCenter.

Get out fast.......be a good employee...work for someone who rewards honesty, integrity and is truly a team player

#3 UPDATE Employee

Employee in the same market.

AUTHOR: Infonet - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, January 04, 2008

I too work in the same market described above. My employment with this company began some time ago. At first I was inspired by Rent a Centers declarations of 'Respect for people' and 'promotion from within' as well as 'this is no job, this is a career'. I signed up with great enthusiasm which I also carried into my work. As time went on, however, and changes took place in my market, what was once a market of 5 or more stores of close-knit teams became torn and disheveled. Never before have I seen people treated this way by their own employer.

From a company that states in its first line of its mission statement to maintain 'respect for people', I have seen a great lack of loyalty and integrity for the collection of people who in turn make the wheels and gears of the machine turn. These individuals who give so much of their time to a company that, of late, has done nothing but demand and take even more from these young adults, husbands, wives, fathers, mothers and grandparents - all sacrificing so much of their time, taking away from their families and friends to give all they can to a company so heartless and two-faced.

Before I continue, I will remind you that I speak of one specific market; Ashland, Galion, Mansfield and Wooster. All cities which reside under the 'reign' of Earl McDonald - District Manager. Experiences in other markets may differ. I am only here to tell you of my experience.

Since the reign of Earl McDonald began in August(ish) of 2007, he has run this market with a semi-fascist motive - declaring his own regulations and standards, that which differ from corporate standards. Account Managers who have maintained control of their routes and routinely hit a majority of company percentage standards are being crucified for minuscule details. Action plans are being set forth at a rapid pace for missing a single days worth of percentages. Employees are being moved around at ridiculous rates.

Most of them having families, must now drive out of town 30-45 minutes or more one way and face the rising fuel costs that had already effected their limited budgets, not to mention taking EVEN MORE time away from their families. Good, let me rephrase that, GREAT managers who maintained a wonderful work environment as well as respect and courtesy towards employees and customers alike are being demoted.

One case comes to mind where a store manager who has worked with the company for 7 years and has been a manager for over 2 years was just demoted when a store merger took place. Earl (DM) then brought in a guy from another market without even posting the job opening to take this managers place. His reasoning for demoting this long-term employee? He felt that this manager could not handle a store of this size since the merger took place.

On that note, I want to point out that the newly appointed manager has only been with the company for about 6 or 7 months as a manager in training. with NO prior rent to own experience. And what happened to promotion from within? I will repeat that the managers position was never posted for application. If it had been, it is required that every applicant be interviewed.

I wonder, with hope of ignorance on corporates behalf, if the company is aware of what goes on in this small market of many? I wonder, if they had knowledge of the treatment these hardworking employees face daily...would this be except able or tolerated? What ever happened to morality and business ethics? We are employees, working hard for a living. Why must we be treated like slaves to this corporate machine? Where does the problem start, and how can it be fixed? As one unnamed employee stated, 'There seems to be too many chiefs and not enough indians'. I like that.

I think it is time that Rent A Center reviews the people they have in place to run these markets and districts to decide whether or not those markets and districts are being run to company standards - starting with the Mission Statement and Core Values which can be found here:

http://media.rentacenter.com/clients/74/filemanager/misc_images/mission.pdf

Rent A Center describes themselves as 'The best kept secret in the job market'.
I ask you this: if you were to live in this area, does this sound like an employer you would be willing to give 48 or more hours a week to?

Awwwww Poor Baby!

AUTHOR: Xrentacenterguy - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, December 30, 2007

Let me start off by saying: Awwwwwww Poor Baby sounds like someone needs his mommy there with him so he can do his job. Welcome to the Real World! Grow up and Quit yout Whinning. If you would do your job and quit worrying about everything else, you could have worked your A** off to get your route (Like any other Account Rep Would ) to the numbers that your Store Manager and Your DM Wanted them to be at. Apparentily you did not get your numbers like you said that you did and you got an Action Plan. So What! Deal With It! And Do your job & Pull your own weight. Instead of wanting your superiors to do it for you. Sounds like to me that you got mad at your superiors, For giving you and action plan and trying to get some one fired by the comments that you are making. And why? Because you cant do your job. You know they have more to do in the store then to sit and babysit you to make sure that you hit your numbers. That's Your Job! Not Theirs! So all I have to say is: If you can't do your job with out whinning, Go Get A Job At A Daycare With All Of The Other Whinners!
