Where's The Rip-Off? Rent to Own places traditionally charge HIGH prices....

You can't go dumpster diving and gret great furniture for free like me and my roomie did when we lived in Dallas?
You can't get good used furniture from a used furniture store?
You can't buy GREAT stuff cheap from IKEA, Wal-Mart, Super target, K-Mart, Big Lots, Family Dollar? Stuff that only takes a few minutes to assemble and it looks GREAT!
There are lot easier ways to get NICE stuff and SAVE MONEY than renting it, allegedly to OWN.
But I always did enjoy the big muscular guys coming around in the little truck to REPO the RENT TO OWN furniture because the people did not keep up the outrageous payments on it.
MY CHAIR THAT I WATCHED THE SHOW FROM WAS PAID FOR!
And, guess what, most rent ot own stores have a LIQUIDATION center where you can go and scarf up some bargains in that very same rental furniture CHEAP,CHEAP, CHEAP and only slightly used.
Of COURSE, IT IS A RIP-OFF. ALWAYS HAS BEEN ALWAYS WILL BE -- that is, until it comes into the LIQUIDATION CENTER or the manager has a private sale and you can buy it to own once and for all. VERY REASONABLE!

The inflated amounts of money that places like RAC and Aaron's charges people, but the things is that these people willingly sign the contracts. There was an Aaron's ad in the paper that showed a single core computer with half a gig of RAM and the final price would have been over $1400! That same computer could be had for less than $300.
I'm certain that you could have found a cheap dvd player at Circuit City or WalMart. There are always kitchen sets and refrigerators on Craigslist...a lot of times you can find one for free if you're willing to haul it off.
The prices at RAC are obscene in my opinion, but they can't rip you off if you don't sign the paperwork.

Unfair not uncommon for RentaCenter

I recently resigned from RentaCenter after an 8 year employment history, working in different states and multiple management positions.
It is a common practice for RAC to exploit and overcharge for product delivered to customers. Many times a unit is rented and returned 6-10 times and re-rented for a like=new item with a profit return that is truly unfair to the consumer. In the industry it is called turns on merchandise. example: dinette set with original manufacturers cost of $300.00 new will show on a contract as retal price of $600.00, the first time rented for $21.99/per week and says in the customers house for 30 weeks, therefore egualing revenue of $659.70. WOW...remember this was a 91 week contract. First customer moves out-of-sate and returns the dinette. RentaCenter applies some furniture polish to it and re=rents the same dinette for $21.99/per week for 87 weeks to customer No 2 for 12 weeks =$239.88-------repeats this process another 4 times for the same dinette = $959.53.
If my math is correct that totals a revenue of $1859.11 rented for 90 weeks rented. Not bad for a $300.00 item ( which by the way-RentaCenter manufactures an exploded original cost from suppliers at DAY ONE. This same dinette is actually only costing them brand new a meager $180.00.)
Unfair? Every state has different laws and regulatory rules for the rent-to-own industry.... NONE>>I REPEAT NONE have regualatons against the cost fixing and informing the consumer about these unfair practices.
Now, to answer the question about what happens to the dineete after being in 6 different homes after generating revenue of over $1659.00 on an item that costs them $180.00 just 21 months prior......RentaCenter rents it again with scratches dings and dents for 26 weeks at tha same $21.99/per week to gain more profit of $571.74.....In fact their computers are locked out for anything lessthan a 26week rental term/nationwide.
This doesn't even factor in the unfair practice of contractual late fees, or so called re=instatement fees which range from $3.00- $7.00 per week depending on the state of origin. So factor in just 20 late paymenys at $5.00 per week and we can add another $100.00 to this dinette.
Now, not forgeting the rubberband guy and the example of his protection plan they so willingly suggest to customers at $15.00...do I need to say more.
The reality of rent=to-own is that only 12 % of all customers finish their ownership obligation...leaving 88% of product to be re-rented over and over unfairly by RentaCenter. ( by the way- the average times on rent for product at rentacenter is far more than 6 times)
I do agree that lack of consumer awareness is a valid point, but the tactics and unfair practices that RentaCenter practices daily is beyond unfair and unjust.
BUYER BEWARE !!!!!!!!

People confuse NEED and WANT all the time. You did not NEED thsoe things , you WANTED them. You did not NEED a dvd player, or a hutch and if you were really in dire NEED of a washer , table and refridgerator, whey not go to a second hand store and get them cheap.
you NEED air, you NEED water, you NEED food, you do NOT NEED a dvd player.

There are State and Federal guidelines to overcharging
AUTHOR: Legaleagle - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Sunday, January 27, 2008
There are very strict State and Federal Guidelines as to what can be charged, interest, fees, excetera in regards to rent to own merchandise. If they did charge you too much I have 2 questions. Why did you not file a complaint with the State Attorney General? Why did you go back and purchase other merchandise, especially another kitchen set, if the 1st one was faulty or defective?

RAC is a bad place

I rented a box of rubber bands from RAC. The price was $10/week. Everything seemed to go well for the first month or so. After that however, they were breaking on a regular basis, so RAC advised me to purchase their exclusive "Platinum Product Protection Plan" (4P as they call it). It was an extra $15 a week, but I felt it was worth it, considering the problems I had with the rubber bands.
I broke one of the rubber bands, and asked for a replacement. They told me that they did not replace the rubber band unless it was deemed unrepairable. They concluded that mine was repairable, and it was sent out to their repair depot. It came back six weeks later, the repair consisted of taping the rubber band back together with scotch tape. Needless to say, it didn't hold but for a second.
I'm into this contract for 5 more years. Please, don't do business with RAC!

What are you supposed to do when you need a kitchen set and have nothing ? or a refrigerator ? i didn't purchase something for luxury I purchased it because it was a necessaity. When you can't afford certain things and your credit is no good RentACenter makes it seem easy.
No credit check, bad credit? no problem come in today and walk out with anything you want all name brands. that's the scam all over there storefront windows and people like me and plenty others out there are taken in by this. They pray on low income communities, all of their stores are setup in low income areas. they have maps in their stores that are sectioned off by income and thats how they scam people.
I am a comparison shopper, and the way they sell it to you is amazing anyone will fall for it.

You are paying for INSTANT and EASY GRATIFICATION. You pick out what you want, and then they deliver it... you have no muss and no fuss. You have no need to research Consumer Reports. You have no need to wait for a sale or join a "Wholesale Club" like Sam's or Costco. You have no need to use an online Shopping Bot.
That is why the price is so high. Your alternative is to do without until you save up enough money, and then you comparison shop for the best deal. [Did you know that about 63% of American Consumers DO NOT comparison shop for the best deal? Scary, really scary. ]
Actually, I find that getting "the most" while paying "the least" is a lot of fun. I use money to keep score. To each their own, I guess.....
