This report is to warn people about Roto Rooter. I had a clogged kitchen sink on a Saturday night which I had clogged twice some years ago, and found some reasonable plumbers to go up on my roof to snake it out, and each time they charged me 89.00 dollars so I looked in the yellow pages to find that Roto Rooter would come out 24/7 with no extra charge for nights ,weekends or holidays. When I called them they said that they only had one tech working that night, and would come out in the morning. I asked the price of cleaning the clogged sink, and the lady from Roto Rooter said the tech would have to look at the problem first, and then give me a total price. When the one tech person came out he said he would do the job for $216.00 I told him I had this done before, and was only charged $89.00 so get this he said well I can work with you on the price, and said he could do it for $129.00 for the service call. I told him to forget it, so my son and I rented a manual snake for $16.00 and in 15 minutes the sink was unclogged. I hope this will deture people from using Roto Rooter, and save you some money.

Yes it would cost more to call a plumber

Roto rooter does not always hire plumbers. I worked for them in the 1980's and was making 40 dollars an hour to snake drains.

It kills me

Why do people think they should be able to get something for nothing? How do they think that a company can charge next to nothing and stay in business? If a large plumbing company charges $89 for drain lines, then plumbers would be making less than minimum wages. Those companies that charge the cheap prices are performing "loss/lead" jobs they loose money on the drain cleaning in hopes of selling you larger repairs.

If you call a plumber to your house for anything, expect to pay $200 or more. That is the cost of doing business.

Not Bad,Huh

Good comment coast.I think the tiger wants something for nothing.I really don't think $129.00 is bad for a Saturday night. And as far as the insurance issue, anybody can advertise that they are insured.Just carry vehicle coverage. This will NOT cover your home for damages.I would say that tiger needs to stay with the $16.00 gadget or what ever it was.

I would be willing to bet that your line has stopped back up by now and still had to call some other company. Why don't you pour some acid in the drain. You can do that for about $5.00.

Insurance

AUTHOR: Tiger - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 30, 2010

Yes roto rooter may be insured, but the other plumbing companies I used before were insured also, and didn't charge an arm and leg plus my little $16.00 gadget was a manual gadget ran by hand, so I don't think I could have ripped any pipes apart with one arm on a crank, so you go ahead and spend your money anyway you like lady.

If this company had done the job for free, you would still be bitching. If you had broke something with your $16.00 gadget, were you insured?I bet Roto Rooter was.The man gave you a FREE est. and you did exactly what you should have. You wasted the mans time, when he could have been helping someone that wanted his help.Get over it.This company will do approx. 2,000,000 jobs every year. They must be doing something right.
