I went in (Gurnee, IL location) to sears to purchase a mattress and a bed. A salesperson assisted us with the online order in store. We used a computer at her desk to place the order. We chose a delivery date of December 11 2013. The bed wasn't delivered until December 30 2013. 19 days late. No apology. When you call in Sears can barely find the order and they immediately tell you "too bad, call the 3rd party seller". 3rd Party seller of course tells you "too bad, call Sears.
The Mattress was purchased through sears and it was delivered on time. The issue was with the bed/headboard that came from a 3rd party.
The December 11 2013 date was a bogus date where sears tags it as "Shipped". What it really means is that the 3rd party seller has tagged it for their shipper to pick it up. It could sit at their back door for weeks once its been tagged. To be clear here this means that the shipper can now pick it up. It is not in route to your home yet. It may not have been picked up yet. Note the 19 days late.
When the bed finally arrived the delivery guys brought the boxes in and told me that they do not setup furniture purchased through Sears. This was a surprise to me since i paid $266.05 for delivery and "white glove" (according to the sales person who assisted us with the purchase) installation.
When i called in to complain about this i was told that delivery options are "at the front door" or "in home placement" meaning i can have the boxes left at the door or pay another $200+ to have them carry the boxes 20 feet into the home. This is not how this was explained to me. Why would anyone pay an extra $200 to have it brought in the door? This is a deceptive practice meant to extract money from customers.
This isn't the sears that you remember. Call centers are not US based. They were not able to find my order because it was purchased through a "3rd party" that is selling through sears.com. I spoke with a half a dozen online representatives and couldn't get help until i called the Gurnee Sears location. Magically they had access to all information even though it was an online order. Unlike other reputable online resellers who work with 3rd parties, Sears does not side with the customer. Once you place the order you are screwed. Buy furniture at a local furniture store or from a reputable online reseller like Amazon.
