I attempted to file a claim for a microwave that was (by my receipt) still under the 3 year protection plan that was purchased in October 09. I was told that they don't sell 3 year plans for small appliances and they would not warranty the unit.
My receipt is quite clear that they do, in fact, sell that combination! Either they need to 1) train their salespeople better, or at least back up their mistakes, 2) get a computer system that doesn't allow an extended warranty to be sold with an incompatible product, or 3) quit scamming customers and not backing up their defective products! I suppose they're hoping no one will remember, or be able to find, the receipt to follow up when their junk quits working.
Do NOT waste money on extended warranties from Sears. They do a very poor job, or no job at all, of following through on their promises!!

Get 2 repair estimates and sue Sears in small claims. Don't waste any more time with their monkeys. When their flunky house lawyer assigned for your district gets the summons, they'll settle up quick, or risk the court arbitrator awarding you even more as punishment.

#2 UPDATE EX-employee responds
the real problem

As a former employee for 6 years (until I left for new employment in november 2011), I think I know the situation. Microwaves used to offer 2 and 3 year "repair warranties." They have recently (within about a year) changed to "replacement agreements" which are standard 2 years only. If you have indeed bought the 3 year warranty....you do not need a receipt for proof, as your warranty is filed under the phone # and address you used to purchase the item. This information, however, is NOT accessible by store employees, you are to call 1-800-469-4663 (1-800-4MY-HOME), which is the line for service repairs and they will create a service ticket and direct you where to take it for repair or replacement if necessary.
The problem IS with the training of new employees. Rather than just basically telling you you're wrong, he should have directed you to a manager who would have surely known this, or at least someone who has worked there longer. This problem has came to me a few times as I was basically the "go to guy" knowing the policies and procedures of most things the best. I, myself, did have a repair warranty on a microwave as well, and the magnet (i think) was replaced at no cost, after it would not heat anymore. Your assumption #1 was correct. The register will not allow a warranty to be sold on an item not eligible, and the warranty does save a lot of money if somthing happens, and is always stood behind by the SERVICE DEPARTMENT where you were supposed to call instead of the store. NOT that you should have know that, but the employee should have directed you there. Hope this helps.
