 You purchased a discounted "restricted" fare ticket.  As such it has certain policies.  One of those policies that they are non-refundable, non-transferable, and non-cancelable.  Where if you need to change your flight they will allow you to do it for an additional fee.

Now, Spirit is basically known as a low-cost airline with tons of fees.  But this fee is not unique to Spirit.  It is actually standard with every carrier except for one that I am aware of.  This fee has also been around for well over a decade.  You would have had the exact same experience regardless.

There is a way you could have avoided this.  You could have purchased a FULL fare ticket in the beginning, as those are totally refundable or changeable.  But of course less restrictions mean a higher cost, and what is that cost?  Well on average figure what ever you paid for the restricted fare ticket double or tripple that amount to find the cost of the full fare ticket.

If anything hopefully this has taught you a very valuble lesson.  Before you check a box or submit a form that says you have read and agree to the terms..perhaps you should actually read them.

Oh and the one airline that doesn't charge a fee....Southwest Airlines.
