I flew R/T from Ac to Ft. Lauderdale this week.
I was in the airport last night, and the people were ready to go at the gate...problem was...the crew was nowhere to be found! the pilots had boarded and started their job, but the attendants were busy chatting in some seats at another gate, just across the way! Blah, Blah, Blah, with 200 people waiting to get to their destination! How about doing what you are paid to do???
So, we finally board and get in the air. The passengers are then notified that they have to PAY FOR WATER if they want a drink! Not only that, but they DON'T ACCEPT CASH! I would be more than happy to pay an extra TWO DOLLARS for my flight if I were able to get a glass of water while in the air! Bad business!I was in a window seat, row 9F...DOESN'T recline!!! In order for me to get a drink of water, I had to get my credit cards, which were in my bag stowed in the overhead! So I sat in my seat that didn't recline, mouth dry as a bone, dehydrating the whole way home! Their "spirit" is non-existant and the next time I will choose to go out of Philly! I am done with Spirit!

Hey Josh.
I'm sorry your had such a bad experience flying Spirit. I agree completely the overall quality of air travel has gone down. I don't much know about Spirit as I have never flown with them. However the price of drinks and the fact they don't take cash is on their web but it's a bit hard to find. It is most likely to due to relatively low fares (even full price ones) and (this the big one) increasing fuel costs. I agree the policy sucks. Especially now that the TSA banned liquids. Whether it's in the airport (airside) or on a Spirit flight either way you'll be buying over priced water.
As far your seat is concerned according Spirit's seating chart (on the web site) you were seated in front of the exit row. According to FAA regulations those seats cannot recline. It's a safety issue they don't want a reclined seat interfering with an emergency evacuation.
Again I'm sorry for your bad trip at least you weren't flying Ryanair now there is a crappy airline but that's another rip off report.

Cheap Ticket and malfunctioning seat.
AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Monday, November 12, 2007
Yes, your ticket was a cheap ticket compared to the CPI adjusted fares from the sixties and early seventies when world class service was the norm. What's changed you ask? Everyone wants the cheapest fare between two city pairs and has reduced the airline product to your very common experience. I am a pilot for one of the majors and I grow tired of passengers like you who feel by virtue of you purchasing an airline ticket you can now completely surrender your every want and need to the personnel wearing the airline uniform. In short, you want it all and wouldn't pay for it. Next time book first class on a real airline for the service you desire, and that ticket is still 20% of the CPI adjusted fare from 1970.
Your seat? We and the FAA have what is called the MEL (minimum equipment list). It allows us to keep jets, including a 240 million dollar Boeing 777, in service when not everything is like new like your seat. Could you imagine our airline's creditors watching a $240,000,000 jet sit on the ramp while our maintenance department tried to "run down" parts to fix your seat, a seat that may have broke from the previous flight? They would destroy us on. The interest on that jet (1) is over $10,000 a day.
And of course your dehydrated... My paycheck like everyone else's in the airline business has gone backwards for 15 years because in part of travelers like you who demand something you aren't willing to pay for. Good Luck!

I am not a serial complainer or an idiot...

I just filed this report to protect consumers' interest. I had a bad experience with Spirit Airlines and thought people should know.
I am not normally one to complain or file these type of reports, but my experience was so bad that I felt the need to warn others.
My point was that they don't serve ANY drinks now, unless you pay for them (even water), and they only accept credit cards. So, if you are a kid traveling alone, a senior citizen, or someone who doesn't happen to have a credit card, then you'd better bring your own water. Either that or you could be stuck drinking the water from the rest room sink!
I also paid full price for a seat and was assigned a seat that didn't recline. Maybe they should ask you if you are ok with that or at least notify you of it before you fly! I'd rather pay an extra few dollars, than have to go without water!
By the way, I don't carry a wallet, so yes, my credit cards were in my bag which was stowed overhead. And for those people who don't know, breathing that re-circulated air can absolutely dehydrate you!
Hopefully this report helps someone. I have had my say.
Thanks!

If you were so thirsty and on the verge of dehydation, why wouldn't you have consumed a beverage prior to boarding?
Also, why wouldn't you simply take out your credit card and buy some water if it were so important to you? The fact that you declined pretty much indicates that you were not as thirsty as you claim you were.
I find it pretty odd that a person would store their credit cards in the overhead bin. Not only is this a very odd place to store valuables, but most men simply keep their wallet in their pocket so it is with them at all times.

I understand your point

I have flown on Spirit many times in the past, and recently flew on them again after not having flown on Spirit for about 8 months.
They now do charge for any drink and they only take credit cards, but they do not tell you this until you are in the air. I cannot find mention of this on the website either. 8 months ago they didn't charge.
When people began complaining, the flight attendant stated, "That's what happens when you get a cheap fare". I didn't get a cheap fare. I paid full price.
The big problem is their new $9 fare club. Those who join this club get the cheap rates. Because of the cheap rates offered to some, those paying full fare have to suffer too. And not only suffer with paying for any extras, suffer the wrath of the flight attendants and counterpersons because they know that with the special rates, they are working with skeleton staffs and could have their jobs cut anytime.

I could care less if it were bottled water or not.

If you were that desperately in need of WATER, you would have stood your lazy self up, gotten your credit card out of the overhead bin, and purchased some water. It's merely 10 seconds of effort on your part.
Furthermore, to blame the airline for your "dry mouth" and "dehydration" is ridiculous, as you could have simply enjoyed one of the FREE BEVERAGES offered on board.
Sounds to me like you just didn't want to pay for bottled water, and made up this exaggerated story to try to prove a meaningless point.
