About 5 weeks ago I noticed over a couple days that my '03 Ford Focus was having trouble shifting through all of the 4 drive gears. The first mechanic I had look at it, plugged it to a machine that reported back some codes that suggested it needed to be repaired. He didn't work on transmissions, so recommended taking it to a transmission specialist shop.
Having to leave town for business, I sent my wife to a "certain" transmission shop on State St in Orem, closest to our home. I explained what symptoms I noticed and the codes that were reported via the previous mechanic's diagnosis, she in turn gave them that same information. They said that my transmission needed to be reconditioned. They estimated the repairs at about $3500 after parts, labor and warranty coverage.
My wife agreed to the service after speaking with me over the phone. They asked her to leave it overnight, since they wouldn't have time to get to it that day. She didn't get a call back for 8 days regarding its condition. It was now ready, so she paid for and picked it up.
It sat in our drive way for a few more days until i returned home. I drove it for a couple days without incident. We returned, as instructed, for the check up on the 14th day. They checked it over and sent us on our way.
The very next day, I drove it to Salt Lake for a job. On the commute home, as I got on the ramp for I-15, the car wouldn't accelerate past 55mph. The engine would only rev up when the gas was pressed. I pulled over, called the shop. The mechanic said it sounded like it was stuck in 3rd gear. He recommended driving it back to the shop for another look. I dropped it off just as they were closing up for the day.
After 3 days, they called saying that the transmission burned up and needed to be replaced, but would be no charge, as it was under warranty. I approved the replacement. Several days later we picked it up.
The next day I drove to Spanish Fork and back for work. On my way home the engine revved up again but eventually shifted back and forth. It wasn't working properly. Then, the radio suddenly died. My radar detector went dead. The car started to putter about the time I got off University Pkwy exit headed back to the shop. It died twice from the freeway to the shop.
The problem was electrical. The battery cable had ground out and fried the alternator, which drained the battery and caused the transmission to fail. Unfortunately it needed to be replaced again.
So we replaced the transmission, the alternator, the battery, the battery cable, and added a cooler directly to the transmission to help with the strain my "commuter driving habits" placed on the vehicle. Another $700 and another week.
I picked it up yesterday, drove it today, and guess what? It's still not fixed, and getting worse! I called again about it. The shop manager said that the last time it was worked on, he personnally drove it for over 30 minutes to make sure that it was working properly. He said that he'd be willing to take another look, but thinks somehow I'm taking advantage of him. I replied with, "I'm the one being taken advantage of, cause after $4200 my car's still not fixed."
I asked if I could take it to another shop in their same chain, to have a different mechanic look at it? I asked if they'd honor the warranty I'd purchased at their shop? He said they would honor it, but that he'd warn them of "my scam" before I got there.
What scam? I'm just a guy who wants his car fixed. A guy who's paid for repairs that haven't worked. A guy who has invested a great deal of time and more money than he has, in the hopes that his car will function again to provide the transportation it was intended for. How could I possibly take advantage of them.
Rather that taking it in, I decided to look online for recourse. I found this and many other pages with people having a similar experience with this company. I hope that someone can aid me in my quest for justice. I can't keep doing this. I am afraid that I'll have to start over and pay some other shop to make things right.
