I am a owner of a 1999 Toyota Camry Solara with a 3.0L V6 engine. At approximately 90K miles I noticed myself having to add oil to my vehicle between scheduled oil changes. This was occurring as early as 2 weeks after the oil change. During my latest scheduled oil change, I asked the Sears technician to check and see if I had an oil leak in which one was not observed.

The engine on my vehicle has since locked up and has been inoperable since the latter part of 3/2003. I had my vehicle towed to Motor Cars International, Inc. Smyrna, Ga. where a Toyota Certified Technician, a gentleman named Tony, checked the vehicle and observed severe oil sludging in the crankcase. At this time I was completely unaware of this being a problem in Toyota vehicles. Tony went on to inform me that he was seeing several Toyota's with this same problem each month. He asked me what I wanted to do with the vehicle and I told him I needed some time to weigh my options. I got on the Internet and found that others were having the same problems that I was. I called Tony and had my vehicle towed to Marrietta Toyota in Marrietta, Ga. When I called Toyota and informed them of Tony's observation, they toldme they would investigate the vehicle when it arrived on site.

The next day I received a call from Marrietta Toyota saying that my engine failed because of worn pistons. I asked the gentleman who called me what caused my pistons to become worn enough to lock up the engine. He initially said normal wear and tear on the vehicle. I told him that I bought my Toyota because I knew I was going to be traveling alot and that my family had a Toyota MR2 that had more than 270K miles on it. Had I known that normal "wear and tear" on my Solara would result in engine failure at 100K I would have never purchased a this car. He then recanted and said that I probably did not do regular maintenance on my vehicle. I told him that I could provide him with regualr vehicle maintenance but he didn't want to see it.

Long story short, I bought this car because it was a Toyota and I felt I was getting a quality product. My feelings are now tainted and every V6 Solara owner I see I tell my story. I'm still paying on this vehicle and cannot drive it. I have gotten great information off of this site and am glad that we as consumers have band together to get results.

Michael, Thank you for sharing your case details. I would highly encourage you to DOCUMENT fully with the NHTSA and Center for Auto Safety. Send a CERTIFIED letter to Toyota with return receipt requested. Let Toyota know that you have no good explanation for your failed engine. On the other hand, you have every reason to believe that your Solara is part of the "Customer Support Program" and should receive full repair under this program. The piston rings and seals are being replaced and these parts have been on nationwide backorder for weeks.

I would advise you also to get an oil sample from your Solara if possible. You should have it analyzed. You will need 4 (four) ounces in a clean, plastic bottle. I can send you additional e-mail if you like. The analyses done on the oil has shown some patterns, according to the reports shared by owners.

Did you get to see the inside of the engine? If not, get a digital camera and take pictures of the oil pan and the oil pump area, especially on the outside edge near the passenger side front wheel. Take pictures of the valve cover and the top of the engine, too.

The pistons failed....but WHY? Oil consumption and blue smoke are among the signs noted before failure or sludge diagnosis. Sometimes, the oil is consumed VERY quickly and the engine throws a rod. The owners are continuing the dialogue about what is happening and why. Of course, Toyota has blamed US...the owners....from day one. Even when oil change receipts were in hand in corporate-sponsored arbitration, Toyota ruled against the consumer. Toyota executives claim to be UNAWARE of a sludge problem in a Toyota vehicle that has been properly maintained. Guess what? There are PLENTY of such cases, but Toyota executives do not CHOOSE to be aware of them. Just as your receipts were rejected, so were those of countless other owners BEFORE the CSP came out.

Apparently, Toyota feels that many of the affected vehicles do not qualify. There seem to be games of semantics in the diagnosis.....LOOPHOLES to deny coverage of such an UNPRECENDENTED (NOT!) repair program.

I'd love for this site to allow me to accumulate signatures on my petition to Toyota Motor Corporation. I'll await approval for the URL to be displayed.

Please keep networking. Make a legal flier and pass it out with a list of resources. Get magnetic signs for your vehicle. Let others know.
