I rented a pickup from the uhaul company. I was told I would be charged the $19.95 for the truck and I opted for insurance at $10.00. I was told at the time of rental that I would not be charged for mileage unless I went over 50 miles. That was not true and I was charged for mileage which ticked me off but I paid it with no problem.

The next morning I check on my bank account and uhaul has charged $80.00 against my account rather than the $41.15 for the truck charges. I called their office and was told they will keep that charge against my account for the next 7-10 business days. I was really mad at learning this and by this experience have learned

DO NOT TRUST ANYTHING YOU ARE TOLD BY UHAUL EMPLOYEES, EXPECT UHAUL TO HOLD YOUR DEPOSIT FOR 7-10 BUSINESS DAYS AFTER YOU RETURN THEIR EQUIPMENT. I have rented many uhauls both trucks and trailers and have never had this happen at any other time. I believe it may just be the Grant Rd Store in Tucson that may not understand how uhaul works or maybe they are just trying to cause discontent with uhaul by behaving in this manor it is hard to say. But buyer beware if you should go into this particular store that represents uhaul.

#4 UPDATE EX-employee responds

was it a credit card

AUTHOR: Letsgofishin - (U.S.A.)

If it was a credit card uhaul has nothing to do with the refund time. When they return the truck in their system the refund goes to your bank, then it is up to your bank's system, it usually takes 3 days.

The question of the day is when was your contract actually closed. If it was closed the day you returned it , then it would be impossible for them to hold your deposit. If they waited a week for some reason then it was their fault. You can check that by asking for the return receipt to see what date it is.

#3 UPDATE EX-employee responds

There may be a misunderstading here.

AUTHOR: S - (U.S.A.)

The understanding as I'm seeing it can hopefully be explained here:

First:
When they went over the charges before the actual rental took place, an estimate was printed. On that estimate, the rental fee of the equipment, the (possible) coverage fee, and the mileage charges are Estimated. The mileage charges are always estimated using 50 miles, that way, you can kind of figure out that it will cost more if you go over the 50 miles estimated, or it won't cost you more if you stay under 50 miles. Sometimes you get somebody new, or even just tired, who is explaining it, and they mess it up (a mistake). It sounds like they mistakenly forgot a word when they explained the posslble charges, that you would not be charged MORE unless you went over 50 miles, as it is commonly explained.

Second:
If this was a credit or debit card transaction:
Once U-Haul puts the transaction through the system, the rest is all up to the banks. When equipment gets rented in-town, an authorization fee of a specified amount (usually $60 - $85 in my experience, depending on the rental) will be held on the account used for payment. There is a message on the screen at the location who's doing the rental, and it sounds as if the location did NOT read that message to you, as they are supposed to.
Unfortunately, over the last couple of years sometime, some people's banks started to hold authorization amounts for up to 30 days. This is Not something U-Haul is doing. While I still worked for the company, we found that we were able to, by customer request, contact their bank and push the issue, but it required faxes, information and time on all three ends. I got my ear bent a lot by people who's financial institutions would hold the money till their waiting period passed, and I didn't blame the people for being upset because even though U-Haul was telling these people about the hold, you would just expect the banks to drop it once the charge clears!

Definitely, the location you rented from messed up. But please don't hold the entire company in contempt for something they actually AREN'T doing (in this case). I can speak honestly when I say that while I was still working for the Regional Office, we helped the people who called about it. I hope this clears up at least most of the problem.

(To comment on one of the comments: It is true that when a rental is paid with cash, the change due back to the customer out of the initial deposit is not always available at the location at the exact time the customer is finished with the equipment. That is just the risk of using cash in a busy cash-in cash-out business, and can usually be rectified within hours.)

Trust me, the dealer needed to hold your money because they were broke! It's not policy

AUTHOR: Dovalautomotive - (U.S.A.)

As an EX dealer Uhaul, I assure you there is no policy to "hold" a deposit. That is absurd and I'm sorry this happened to you. What really happened is the dealer couldn't afford to pay you back for whatever reason, maybe their account was in overdraft or something like that. It could even have been because UHaul screwed the dealers account too !
Trust me they treat dealers worse than customers, then wonder why they're doing so poorly with both customer and dealer, yeesh!
