Uhaul had no problem taking my online truck rental reservation on Aug 9th, 2002. A local rental agency was supposed to call me within 24 hours to verify that the truck was available. After 3 days with no confirmation, I called the regional 888 number to inquire.

Unfortunately, the 888 number puts you into a queue and then (after 20 minutes), spits the call out to a constant ring that never gets picked up. I called the local store to get some answers and the same thing happened with them. The phone rang and rang for 10 minutes (during normal business hours in the middle of the day i must add).

The following day I made a reservation with Budget truck rental and decided to cancel my uhaul reservation. It is now 1:00PM Eastern time 4 days after my initial reservation. I have spent the past two hours trying to cancel my reservation for this coming weekend, however, the 800/888 numbers are doing the same as yesterday. I finally got through to someone and requested a reservation cancellation. They transferred me to someone else who was supposed to cancel it. He then said he would transfer me to the cancellation people and guess what......

I found myself right back in the original queue from the 888 number. After 30 minutes (20 of queue music...10 of constant ringing and no answer), I gave up and decided to do whatever it takes to let people know about uhaul. If I cannot get through to them within 24 hours of my reservation, I will be charged 50 bucks. I am sure that is what their intentions are.

I am sorry to hear about your bad experience with UHaul, but unfortunatly you aren't the only one. U haul's policy is to take the resevervation, even if we don't have the equipment to cover it just take it and worry about "covering" the reservation later.
The best advice I can give, is don't take thier word for anything. Especially if you are moving during thier busy seasons which are: Fall between August 20th and Sept. 1 or Spring between March 1st and April 30th.(*Please note that if you are moving between 8/20-09/01 they are only extremly busy in one region which is New England At that point in time they will be severly booked in oneway rentals) The second thing is make your reservation at least a week before you wanna move, (don't bother trying to book your rental 6mths in advance because that has no bearing on when you get a truck.) Especially if you are moving on Labor Day weekend out of the New England area, the reason for this is because of the delay.

UHaul will "delay" your reservation because they are waiting on trucks to come into the area. Many customers I have spoken with have waited upwards of a week to get thier truck. So if you make your reservation earlier and get the truck earlier, consider yourself lucky for not having to wait for a truck. You may have to pay a $20 late fee for each day late but isn't that better than not having a truck at all?

Lastly, if you do all of this and still end up waiting, try to be patient. Especially when you are dealing with customer service or the reservation deptartment. Those people working in there have it tough. They have to cover for Uhaul's mistakes. It is a very stressful job. And I have witnessed some customers who were "accidently" put on the bottom of the waiting list because they were so rude to the Reservation Managers. If you are nice and try to work with the Reservation Manager they will apperciate the gesture and will go the extra mile to get you a truck as early as possible. Good luck to all you moving!
