UNIVERSAL GAS AND ELECTRIC HAD ME SIGNED UP FOR A 5YR CONTRACT WITHOUT THE APPROVAL OF THE BILL HOLDER. THEY CLAIM THE CONTRACT WAS SIGNED BY MY SPOUSE AT WHICH TIME I WAS SINGLE!??? THEY CLAIM THE CONTRACT WAS SIGNED IN MAY 2007 AND SIGNED BY MY SPOUSE. WELL I DIDN'T GET MARRIED UNTIL JUNE OF 2007 AND THEY CAN'T PROVE WHO IT WAS THAT SIGNED THE CONTRACT. THEY DID NOT CHECK ANY ID OR ANY SS NUMBERS TO PROVE THAT SHE WAS MY SPOUSE. I AM VERY UPSET I WOULD HAVE NEVER SIGNED UP FOR THIS KNOWING IT WAS FOR 5YRS. THEY DON'T HAVE ANY SIGNATURE OF ANY KIND SHOWING THAT THE PERSONS NAME THAT APPEARS ON THE BILL IS KNOWINGLY LOCKED INTO A CONTRACT WITH THIS COMPANY. I HAD JUST FOUND OUT THAT I WAS LOCKED IN TO THIS CONTRACT TODAY AND THEY ARE REFUSING TO CANCEL MY CONTRACT WITH THEM!! THEY DON'T LISTEN. THIS IS A FRAUDULENT CONTRACT THAT I WAS LOCKED INTO AND DIDN'T EVEN KNOW ABOUT IT!! THIS CAN'T BE LEG

NOTHING IN YOUR POST SUGGESTS THAT UNIVERSAL GAS & ELECTRIC DID ANYTHING WRONG!!!

In response to Csd's comment, "They don't have any signature of any kind showing that the persons name that appears on the bill is knowingly locked into a contract with this company."

Universal Gas & Electric's (UGE) policy is to confirm that the customer is either the account holder, or spouse of the account holder (including common law spouses). UGE established this policy consistent with the Gas Customer Choice Programs of the respective utilities, which specifically require that UGE include contract language permitting contracts to be signed by non-account holder spouses. Both of those provisions state as follows:

In bold 14 point type above the place for the customer's signature, the statement:

I acknowledge that I am the account holder, a person legally authorized to execute a contract on behalf of the account holder, or the spouse of the account holder. I understand that by signing this agreement, I am switching the gas Supplier for this account to (new Supplier name). I understand that gas purchased for this account by (new Supplier name) will be delivered through [utility's] delivery system. The account holder, or the person who signed this contract on behalf of the account holder, has 30 days after today to cancel this contract for any reason through written or verbal notification to (new Supplier name).

UGE confirms this fact at multiple points in the sales process, as follows:
-As required, UGE's residential contracts contain this language.
-UGE agents are trained to verify that the customer signing is the account holder or the spouse of the account holder.
-As part of the training process, UGE agents are tested to verify that they understand that only an account holder or the spouse of the account holder can sign the contract.
-UGE's agents are required to confirm that the customer is authorized to sign the contract as part of the sales presentation.
-Section 1 of UGE's Terms and Conditions, entitled About this Contract, state as follows: In this Contract,Customer,' you,' and your' mean the account holder who completes and signs this Contract or a person authorized to do so by the account holder.
-The verification call also asks the customer to confirm that they are the account holder or spouse of the account holder.
-UGE's confirmation letter also states A copy of the Universal Gas & Electric Price Protection Program and a user manual which provides all of the program details, along with the terms and conditions for your reference, was left by our representative, signed by yourself as the person authorized to enter into the program.

Csd, the bottom line is...someone was in your house when the UGE agent knocked, produced a gas bill for the agent, and signed as the spouse of the account holder. HOW CAN YOU BLAME UNIVERSAL GAS & ELECTRIC FOR THIS?!

And, in instances where UGE has determined that the person signing the contract did not have the authority to enter into the agreement, UGE has at times permitted individuals to terminate their contracts without paying early termination fees. However, UGE has been the printed gas supplier on your bill FOR THE PAST NINE MONTHS! How can you claim ignorance after such a long period of time?!
