I'm writing this post after the worst experience I've ever had in a retail establishment. 11.06.06 I visited the Valero on FM 518 in League City.

I needed to get gas and to save my cash I decided to use my visa debit card. I knew for a fact that there was money in the acct, (I had just made a balance inquiry at bank when I withdrew the cash I did have on hand)

After swiping my card the pump said "please see cashier" Now mind you I stop at this store everyday to buy a soda and my cigarettes. Everyday it is the same rude employee working the counter.

I walked in and asked him what was wrong and why did it say "see cashier" He immediately went nuts. He told me that it wasn't his fault that I was broke and had no money. I tried to explain to him that there was money in the acct and if he could just try to run it again.

He refused and continued to yell. I asked him very kindly why was he being so rude, I had cash to pay for my gas, I just wanted him to swipe my card again.

At this point there are people everywhere watching this man yell at me for no reason. Not once did I raise my voice to him. Once again, I asked why he was being so ugly to me. I shouldn't have said that because that sent him into a frenzy telling me
"ugly, i'm being ugly? every day you bring your UGLY FACE in here, every day I have to look at your ugly face." "GET OUT OF MY STORE!!" I WAS SHOCKED!!!

I went ahead and paid for my cigaretts with my cash and left. I drove two stores down and purchased gas with my debit card.

I'm not sure what his deal or if they get charged extra for running a card 2xs. I'm not sure. I've worked in retail and understand that they get paid very little to do what they do, but I don't feel that customers should be treated this way.

A good friend of mine went into the store this morning to try to get contact info for the owner/management of the store so I could file a complaint. The employee wouldn't give her any information.

11.07.06 Went online to www.valero.com to try to find out who was in charge of this store. The once again, very rude customer service rep basically was useless. Could only tell me that it is an "Angel Store" and she had no contact info.

My feeling is if they allow these "Angel" people use their name and gas they should have some contact info for whoever owns the store, name, phone number something.

I would advise anyone that goes to this particular Valero, dont do it.

See Cashier Message on Gas Pump

AUTHOR: Dan - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, May 24, 2008

Pardon me for jumping onto my soap box.

First, the rude employee is probably a minimum wage, frustrated individual who is in a dead end job with no future. I say this with confidence because if they were educated, they wouldn't be there (and neither would I).

I have run across this issue when I use my card to purchase gas at a station where I have never used my card before. After the cashier enters the card # info, I don't have to see the cashier again (and I don't want to).

Also, it could be that your account balance was too low for them to place a large hold on your funds; as much as $100. It doesn't matter if you have $50 in the account to purchase $20 worth of gas. They should only place a hold on your funds for the amount of purchase.

The thing to watch out for is some gas stations will put a large hold on your funds (as much as $100) just for a few dollars worth of gas. This hold can stay in place for several days, causing overdrafts. Banks love it because you aren't aware of the hold amount until you check your account balance after overdrafts occur. I don't know if the bank is making money on these 'held' funds or the gas station. But hundreds of thousands of dollars of 'held' funds over 3-4 days at 4% interest can accumulate hundreds of $ of interest for someone other than you (or me). Holds over the amount of purchase should be released immediately after the close of the transaction, not 3-4 days later when the merchant decides to reconcile the purchase.

I buy my gas a Safeway and Costco in the Phoenix area as they don't put that hold on my funds, yet. As soon as I get home (within 15 minutes) the proper amount of gas purchased shows on my bank statement. Well, actually, I caught Safeway putting a $1.00 hold on my account a couple of times because I purchased gas after hours. So, with that, there is absolutely no reason for these excessive holds to be place on anyones funds.

Contact the Secretary of State

Although I'm puzzled why you went ahead and purchased cigarettes from this idiot instead of going elsewhere, you can find out pretty much all you need to know by contacting the secretary of state's office. They may have a website that you can search for corporate officers and contact information, or you may have to call them...in any case, that was indecent behavior EVEN if you had no money.
Good luck!
