SO I had service with verizon for quite some time and had downloaded many games, never had an issue with being charged for the transmitted data for the game download. You are warned that the download will incur data charges. However recently my daughter asked if she could download Guitar Hero, I looked to see what the pricing was It stated $4.89 per month or $11.99 for UNLIMITED use. I Told her ok she could purchase the unlimited use version.
Now what Verizon does not tell you, and after speaking with a customer representative you will not find this information out anywhere it is not explained ANYWHERE. Every time this game is played it is constantly downloading data and uploading data. I found this information out after I received a $512.00 phone bill for one month of service.
I contacted verizon and asked why is my bill five hundred dollars. The customer rep told me it was from data charges. I than asked for a data block to be put on the phone line she said ok no problem done. Next month I get another high bill I dont remember exactly how much But once again from Data.
So I call verizon back and ask how am I being charged data with a data block on the line this time the rep asks what games I have on the phone when I mention guitar hero she states "Ah thats why your still being charged for data, every time you use the game it transmits data", so why than didnt the rep tell me that last month when I called her reply "well I am sorry the rep you spoke with was not familiar with all our applications to stop the data charges you will have to remove the app from your phone. So thats what I did.
Now I am fighting these charges and of course getting no where. The customer rep I spoke to today says well it is assumed the customer knows how the application works before they download it. HOW no where does it explain it, and one of their HIGHLY TRAINED customer reps was not even aware of this so how in the world is the consumer supposed to retain this knowledge. STAY AWAY FROM VERIZON
I have been repeatedly ripped off by them over and over again they always seem to find a way.

I do not have a Get it Now capable phone in front of me at this very moment, but I know for a fact that the data charges are mentioned, even before you buy it.

The online store on your phone has always charged data usage to browse and download applications. If you want to avoid these charges then sign up for a plan or feature that includes unlimited data usage. For example you could sign up for the VCAST V-pak which will cover your data charges for using Get It Now and also includes unlimited Mobile Web usage. The fee for the V-pak is $15 per month. Then there are the Nationwide Premium plans which give you unlimited data, PIX, FLIX and TXT messaging. Also included in the monthly charge are unlimited Mobile Web and VZ Navigator. For more information check out Verizonwireless.com which explains in detail many options to avoid unexpected charges.
As a side note when you place a "data block" on the account in most cases the feature that the CSR will put on the account will be an applications block to prevent the download of additional applications via Get It Now. If the CSR were to block all data your PIX and FLIX messaging would cease to function. In your case the CSR failed to mention that the applications you had already downloaded would still be able to access the data network and thus still be able to charge data to your account.
Most importantly be a responsible adult and teach your children that wireless phones are not toys and that as with all things in life nothing is free.
