I got a letter at a second home of mine yesterday from Whitewing Financial Group, a Ms Danyell Partee, stating that I owed $6123.65 to Chase Manhattan of which $1788.29 was the original balance and that I needed to respond immediately. Since I have never had a Chase Manhattan account (and I might add they are always approaching me with offers), I was concerned that someone had somehow started an account with my information.

When I called about this and told her I had no such account, she asked if I had ever been married and like a fool I said yes - but divorce 18 years ago. She immediately attributed the account to my ex husband ("he must have opened it without my knowledge"), dated the account back 20 years and tried to settle with me for the $1700 amount. I told her that was impossible since I took all the bills with me (only way to protect myself) and it was the first I had heard of it. (She said it was charged off in 1992 when he filed bankruptcy - he was married to someone else at that time!) I recently bought this second house so I know there isn't anything on my credit report about it.

I told her I would not be paying "one red cent" against his debt and that if it showed on my credit report I would sue! She said to take it to my attorney. I then looked up this site.

I think I will first send a "cease and desist" letter, maybe copy it to the state attorney general's office in Oregon and Texas and if they continue will file a report with the Federal Trade Commission (have the info thanks to a contributor to this site) since at that time they will be in violation of the FCRA. After that, I can shred letters with the best of them - I have an excellent credit report so I doubt they can damage it with their scam - if they do, that is what attorneys are for - to collect damages!!!

Thank you to all you previous reporters for the excellent information you sent!!
