I engaged an agent from this company and found that my premium was less than half what progressive and many other insurance companies quoted me at. This raised a red flag. (I mean, wow, out of the blue a lone insurance company is half my quoted premium from scores of other agencies)

I then started asking the agent very direct questions trying to catch him off guard or catch him lying. The more and more I pried into the nitty gritty workings of their company the more red flags were being raised. I then found this site on the internet and it confirmed my suspicious.

This is a very shady company people, don't be lured by their cheaper rates, they obviously have an unethical business model that is set up to glean extra revenue from the customer with various nickel and dime charges hidden in fine print.

Sooo, I decided to call up again with a total bogus name and info and pretend I was going to buy policy. I asked the same direct questions and even presented various scenario's to the agent (various scenarios wherein I would file a claim, and their resulting process) Both agent's conflicted greatly in what they said. This was the nail in the coffin for me. This is a very very shady company.

I plan on contacting everyone here that was "robbed" by this company and I plan on contacting the Better Business Bureau.

Not to mention they claim to be based in California, yet the only address I found was a PO Box in South Dakota. Yes, a PO Box. What kind of reputable company does business from a PO Box. The only companies I can think of are collection agencies and other low-rent type of businesses.

Something else very questionable was their response to my inquiries regarding the need and use of my social security number. (because outside of home loans, auto loans and medical insurance, I don't give me social to anyone for any reason what so ever.) When I asked both agents why my social security number was needed they fumbled around with responses and contradicted each other. (finally after I said "well thanks for your time but I do not render my social to just any random business - I will have to pass on this policy", only then did they say they could give me a policy without it) Shady! Shady! Shady! In the end they claimed it was to ensure "my policy is as accurate as possible". Absolute rubbage. It is obviously used for collection purposes when the customer ultimately cancels their policy and then gets reamed with with cancellation penalties hidden in fine print. Who ever heard of a cancellation penalty from an insurance company???

If you really are a masochist and still desire to patronize this company - I HIGHLY advise you pay with a money order or bank check, under no circumstances would I trust these thieves with your credit/debit/checking account number and certainly not your SSN.

Watch Out

Watch out for those lowball insurance quotes. Years ago an insurance agent tells me he can beat my current auto insurance company. He gives me a quote about 25% cheaper then my current company. The BIG problem was his policy was only giving me 25% of the coverage that my current policy was. 75% less coverage for 25% less money. For his 25% discount, instead of a $100,000 policy, I'd end up with a $25,000 policy. He was gonna raise my deductables also. So pay attention to your coverage.

Silly Silly Silly

Well it's terrible you had such a bad experience with esurance. I was a claims rep with esurance, and only quit my job because I moved out of state. Esurance is a great company! Of course they are still new and growing and you also have to take into consideration that not everyone can be happy. First I would like to address the Po Box issue. They use PO Box address to protect the employees while I work at Esurance I had a number of people threaten my life. I assure you I am the one person you've talked to on the phone and thanked. I took pride in my job and got several complements. It's the nature of the business to have people get mad at you. If you've never worked in a call center you would know why and appreciate the anonymity it provides. I don't want some wack job to show up at my place of employment and wait for me in the parking lot because my employer posts the address all over the internet.

Now to answer why you were asked about your SSN. To give you a correct quote all insurance companies are now using your credit score to give you a rate quote. If you go online it clearly states. Geico and State Farm do the exact same thing. It's unfortunate that you didn't get a clear answer. But it also sounds like you went into this with preconceived notions and nothing would change your mind. And in doubt ask for a supervisor sadly insurance has a lot of gray areas get a clear answer if you feel like someone is being shady.

Esurance has a number claims office for the convinence of their customers. It just so happens that there Initial claims report office is in South Dakota. Main claims office remains where Esurance states in Cali. Now branch offices as I stated are all over the country.

While Working with Esurance I had a number of opportunities to help my community. There were school drives, park cleanings, canned food donations just to name a few. Not to mention that Esurance is a green company. As an ex employee I would recommend their insurance and this job to anyone of my friends and family memebers and have. My mother and sister currently work there and are very happy.

Doesn't really sound like esurance was the problem here.....

First I do not work for nor have Esurance. I can also not speak for these "differences" you got when you called. But there are other items that need some clarification. Not only on how this company works, but other insurance companies.

Esurance is based in CA, it took about 30 seconds using google to find it.
Esurance

The PO Box in SD you were refering to was where you send documentation and for customer service issues. But they are not alone in using a PO Box. Just about every major bank, credit card, finance and insurance company uses PO Boxes to process documents and/or payments. You can check this for yourself, go to any major insurance company web site and click on the Contact Us link. So do not let the fact that they are using a PO Box be a determining factor for you.

You stated "because outside of home loans, auto loans and medical insurance, I don't give me social to anyone for any reason what so ever."...So you have NEVER applied for a credit card, Utilities, have a Cell Phone, Opened a Bank Account, Filed Taxes all of which use your SSN.

Several insurance companies will require(or at least ask for) your SSN. But this is usually in states where they are still allowed to use your credit rating as part of determining your rates. The other case is when you are asking for a payment plan, they check your credit to see if you are credit worthy for a payment plan. But there are plenty of carriers who do not ask for that, so if you are uncomfortable giving your SSN then search out another company.

Insurance Practices

AUTHOR: Becky - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, January 03, 2008

I am currently working for an insurance company and many people on this website seem to be confused on how insurance works. In my experiences peoples rates do not increase if you are honest in the first place for example how long of a lapse in coverage you have or how long you have been continuously insured, driving record, accident history and people residing in your household.

Many people that have issues with their premium increasing have lied in some sort on the application or accidentally forgotten to give all the info. Insurance companies do check out all the info that you give them such as your driving record and how long you have been previously insured. That is their job to do so based on the fact they are taking on the responsibility to insure you. The reason that they ask for your SS number is the fact that almost all insurance companies base your premium on a credit based insurance score regardless of what they say. The better your credit the better your rate.

I have seen it time and time again with people thinking that they can get away with a cheap rate and that nobody will ever find those 3 accidents they have and also the fact they have a friend living with them that has a suspended license and drives the vehicle on a daily basis. The insurance company is taking the risk of insuring you and trying to keep their loss ratio down and staying in business.

Also people think that filing claims is not going to effect your premium but in all honesty make sure to only file claims that are going to be worth while. People all the time are filing claims for under the deductible amount and that really does follow you for a long time and can hurt your rates. By this I mean that door ding from a parking lot is really not worth having a hundred bucks from the insurance company and it following you on your record for up to 10 years.

Also be aware that the higher the deductible the more you pay to fix your own vehicle. You have the option of paying more on your premium and less in an accident and vice versa.

As for the payments on credit cards it is not the companies that take that long it is the credit card companies who take that long to process the info for the refund. Even your check card can take that long to post a return to a local store.

From what I found on the Esurance website the company is based out of Sacramento and the address is listed and it looks like from the job section the main call center is based in Sioux Falls SD.

Hope this helps people somewhat understand how insurance premium increases work and how if people were just honest in the first place all these issues may be eliminated.
