I have been a employee of allied barton for two and a half years out of thier las vegas site. Last june the site I was working switched companies instead of jumping ship I stayed on with allied. they only had one graveposition available at the time or so they told me. I was told it would pay eleven dollars due to the fact that it was only twenty four hours a week but that I could get more hours by filling in other spots.
I came to find out that I was never paid at that rate and actually had my pay cut to ten dollars an hour without any notification when I asked my supervisor about this I was told that they had forgotten to notify me. I did the working different sites a few times but after realizing I would have to work at least six days a week just to make forty hours was not worth the hassle espicially since they have roving position for this and those employees make at least thirteen an hour. I have tried on a few seperate occasions to see if I could go back full time including inquiring about a post on thier website looking for supervisors, I was told that there wasn't a opening at the time.
I have had positive evals including one that said I would be a good candidate for a supervisor position. I am a veteran with experience in Naval law enforcement as well as a full time college student. I have never had a negative work review or complaints about appearence or conduct.
When my pay was cut I went to nevada labor comission and was told they could get me back one weeks worth of the difference so I decided that it would not be worth stirring the pot. So I let it go hoping that I could just find a better position later on. On April 21st I was visited by three field supervisors two of which had just been hired as supervisors in the past couple of weeks. One persisted to ask me ridicoulos questions and the final straw was when I noticed him whispering to the trainer that I was wearing shoes that were not all black the trainer questioned me about them and when I told them I understood but there was nothing that I could do about it at this time due to the fact my take home pay was only two hundred a week and I have a family of five to support. They continued scolding about the shoes not being within company policy which I proceeded to tell them that if they have such a problem with it that they should buy me new shoes. I said the shoes have no bearing on the job and that when I was able to purchase them I would.
I proceeded to tell them that I had been wearing these shoes since before December and had no complaints about them and that they should be addressing the fact that the equipment at the site was consistenly broken and that we had not even been provided a flashlight. Which I was told that the bicylce had a light to which I replied am I suppsoed to lift the bike up and over objects to utilize that light. I also told them that if allied barton so worried about thier employees appearence they would not cut thier pay or giving thier graveyard employees black pants and black coats to wear in the winter time. Or visit the site more than just once every few months.
On the 26th of april I was visited by the third site manager that I have had in as many months who proceeded to tell me that the comments I had made had the district manger in a uproar and that he was concerned because he put me on the defensive I used curse words to which I replied that I was a sailor and that sometimes it gets the best of me. He then told me that he had negative first impression of me and which I asked him if he would like for me to go home and he replied no to finish out my shift (with my non comforming shoes) that he would go to bat for me regardless to which I said no thank you I am a grown man and that I felt good to finally have gotten some of those things off my chest.
On the 27th of April 2010, I was called by phone and told I was to be suspended immediatly without pay until I could conform to the companies policy regarding my shoes. I asked how was I supposed to do that considering I could not afford to do it before. I was told not there problem and that I needed to come into thier office clear on the other side of the city to sign my suspenion papers to which I declined until he could get me a meeting with the district manager as well as the president of the company. I have not heard back from them. This company I feel is bullying me into quiting and have nothing other than my shoes to get me on. I feel I exposed the fact that they don't deliver proper training, equipment or staff support and a inadequte supervisory staff who does not consistenly check on thier employees or accounts and I am being punished for that.
