An associate of mine made comment on this site in the past on this issue involving contract guard companies (notice I didn't say "security"). I will not rehash that or other issues nor am I going to make light of or denounce others situations here. Suffice to say, after reading many of the things written on several different companies by many people (most of whom have the same stories), my associate asked me to make these comments on here today.

"Allied Barton Sucks", a guard company is a SERVICE provider; not a police force. You are not supposed to "protect and serve" in the manner of a peace officer as I've seen implied many times on this site. The title "observe and report" is also somewhat incorrect as well. The most honest thing I have ever seen from a security company about the industry was from a Barton employee handbook many years back which summed it all up in a paragraph: "Nothing brings a smile to a client's face than for a security officer to say 'I take full responsibility'"

ANY service provider, whether it is for guards, parking, cleaning, and so forth, are out to make a profit like any other business. The client, regardless of who they are or the situation, IS ALWAYS RIGHT. You, as the guard, will always be on the defensive. A guard is expendible and can/will be replaced at the client or guard company's whim. To keep a client, a guard company will always, when push comes to shove (and it often does) sacrifice a guard or two whether or not the guard did their job or not. The client/customer pays the bill. I've yet to see any service provider that will back their employees when it comes down to keeping their client happy. This is just like any other service business...it's primary concern is the profit they make and how much they can make in short order; not the guards or even their customers. Clients who use them know this and look at it from this point of view.

The description of what you do is what around 95% of those who work as guards do. There is usually very little that a guard does that could really be considered a security function. Guards serve as manpower, "go-fers", receptionists, or clerks. The security function is often just being a visible "scarecrow" on the premisis hoping the bad guys will go elsewhere. The primary function of a guard is like the bumper of a car, to "take impact", look pretty, and, unfortunately, not be very smart. It is a stereotyped line of work...and mostly public relations.

Discrimination does go on in it at all levels, some less, some worse. Guard companies are usually just happy to "have an availible warm body" irregardless of who it is. Many clients, however, don't and will tell the guard company to provide a specific look (again, brains don't come into this) that will last a few weeks or months. Most guards (and even their managers and owners in some cases) do not know anything about real security...again, this really isn't the purpose of a guard service. 'Eye candy' will usually win out over brains and experience. This is just the way it is, for right or wrong.

A guard job is NOT an entry-level job position. It is, to be blunt, a temporary job similair to employment agency positions. While good for students, people between jobs, and retirees, it is not good as nor should be reasonably considered a professional career and few successfully make it one. Even managers have a short span (usually three years)in this kind of industry.

When you work in this kind of business, use it as a learning experience and tool...not a career goal. Look for better opprotunities, then move on to bigger and better things.

I actually had some nutcase psychos from one security company stalk me and they blew up my car... It was so bad, I asked the Texas Department of Public Safety to REMOVE MY NAME FROM THEIR DATABASE...

It seems one of the worst stalkers, a guy I used to work with at a notorious Protective Services Company in Arlington,TX, was convicted of a felony and can't get another security officer licensed armed or otherwise, and he was STILL stalking me.
THIS is the class act kind of people you meet in private security...I don't know what happened to the other guy but I doubt if they will find me in Illinois...

The security companies I worked for do NOT like women of any race, ethnicity,color, age and they are not too fond of older folks, African American at all, and Hispanic older males.
THEY LIE TO YOU! THEY DISCRIMINATE! THEY MAKE UP LIES ABOUT YOU --JOB REFERENCES FROM HELL DESIGNED TO KEEP YOU FROM EVER GETTING EMPLOYED IN ANY INDUSTRY AGAIN. EVER! And if they can they will screw up your chances of renting and apartment.

Worse still, nobody bothers to ask if I was all that bad, then why wasn't I arrested and charged. Why was I still able to be commissioned to carry a firearm in the State of Texas until I got so SICK of 20 years worth of HARRASSMENT that I just forgot to renew it.

THE WORST WAS STATEWIDE PATROL in AUSTIN,TEXAS but they were ALL the same and ALL AS BAD!

Working for a private security company is like working in HELL.

You didn't say what ethnicity and gender you were but if you were a woman, FORGET PRIVATE SECURITY!

In my case, there was a gay male manager in one company where I worked who did NOT WANT ANY WOMEN and he made it known. Finally after he was reported to EEOC back in the 1980s, he had to start hiring women but he kept the harrassment on and sometimes it almost had fatal consequences. The company has been mentioned here.
He also harrassed other gay male employees, lesbians, African Americans, Hispanics and the list went on...

Please don't misunderstand, I think ALL PEOPLE DESERVE TO BE TREATED EQUALLY and somebody's private life is none of my business ( Unless they deliberately try to harm me or some innocent person) but when you get attacked on every form by a coked up old queen who is intent on DESTROYING you and manages to be believed AND EVEN EXTENDS THIS HATRED TO TRYING TO DESTROY YOUR FRIENDS, then THAT IS WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT WITH PRIVATE SECURITY!

Allied Security is a messed up place where all they care about is the All-Mighty dollar and where I was they were scamming the clients and cheating the employees as well.
I HATED EVERY MINUTE I WORKED THERE AND ALTHOUGH I WAS NOT HAPPY WHEN THEY LOST THE CONTRACT WHERE I WORKED ( We were underbid with the contrivance of Allied's own post supervisors who were promised more money with the new company and then were promptly fired because they might sell out the new company the same way ---tough shizsky, guys!)

It was nothing but backstabbing, insults, vandalism to my personal vehicle, lies, threats all the time and death threats nonstop on my home phone. The idiot guard even came onto my post to attack me physically..all because they didn't want a woman working there or me reporting his efforts to steal from the client and sell contraband to the people who worked on the night shift... He got fired but NOT for what he did to me. the drugged up psycho threatened to clean an illegal immigrant cleaning lady and wrote her a note and it had his fingerprints on it and THAT is what he was fired about. Allied did not give a **** about what happened to me and the fact he was going to hurt me!
