The sales pitch sounds great! Carmax is unlike any other (they tell you) when you are looking to purchase a used car, because they provide a 30 day warranty "in writing". Sales personnel at all levels tell you that you have 30 days to visit the dealership's service department for "any" problem encountered under this warranty and it will be fixed. Upon bringing the car back for an item "covered" under the warranty, they refused to fix the problem, and now their response to my inquiries is, "Well, it is a used car," and they repeatedly refuse to honor their warranty!!!! The corporate customer care line is no help and simply repeats, "Well, it is a used car, after all." However, specific items that are supposedly covered under the warranty are NOT covered if they meet Carmax's standards, which are not provided to the customer until an attempt is made by the customer to have "30-day warranty" work completed. We were told today by Carmax corporate that their "standards" are proprietary information and they would not share them with us...INTERESTING. We are very disgusted with this company, its service personnel, and its managers, and will never purchase another car from them in Wisconsin or any other location. We also purchased an additional 75,000 mile warranty, which allows us to take the car to have work done elsewhere, which we fully intend to do. My recommendation: go somewhere else for a car, go the grocery store for a lemon, service your car anywhere but Carmax, set your expectations very low if you decide to call their customer care line at corporate. They are trained to read boiler plate information and will disregard anything you say. Don't believe us....give it a $25,000 try like we did!

You say you bought this vehicle at night, did you not take delivery of this vehicle in the "Drive Isle"? I ask this because ALL CarMax locations deliver the vehicle to the customer in the Drive Isle which is VERY WELL LIGHTED. How could you not see the damaged windshield, or the peeling paint on the bumper? Lets say that you are one of those morons that does not look a vehicle over prior to driving off with it, what about the next day or the one after that? CarMax does have a 5 day money back guarantee, why was that not mentioned in your original post? Could it be because you damaged the vehicle after you took delivery of it, and when you tried to return it CarMax told you that you could not because it was not in the same condition as when you bought it? I think that's what really happened.

Glass, glass framework, paint

The Carmax we dealt with would not replace a badly pitted and chipped windshield, because it met their STANDARDS and, although the pits and chips (several of which were over 1/8") caused visibility problems IN THE SUNLIGHT, the damage was considered COSMETIC. We were told that the driver only needs a 12" x 12" area to drive the car. (Really? Which 12" x 12" area? We have drivers that range in height from 6'3" to 5'1".) The windshield is actually an important safety feature in the automobile and this windshield was ready to crack in several places. It was not safe to be driving in that condition. It is not cosmetic and the damage that we wanted repaired was extensive. We also had paint peeling from the bumper (which is actually cosmetic), and when they tried to fix that, the front headlight lens was severely scratched. Although they caused the damage, they told us that they wouldn't fix it, because, "How did they know that the scratch wasn't already there?" and, "It doesn't affect the FUNCTIONALITY of the light." (According to whom? A deep scratch changes the light emanation from the GLASS headlight lens.) If the warranty was being honored properly, then it wouldn't matter if the scratch was already there, because the headlight lens is covered by the warranty under glass and/or glass framework. Furthermore, the warranty says nothing about "standards," or "functionality," or "cosmetic damage." In other words, the Carmax service manager picked which items he wanted to fix and which he didn't want to fix, although all of the repairs we needed were covered under the warranty. By the way, we could not see the damage to the windshield prior to purchasing the car, because we test drove it after dark and purchased it after dark. We expressed concern about wanting to see it during the day, and we were told not to worry, because the 30 day warranty covers EVERYTHING pre-existingly wrong on the car. We could have the peace of mind of knowing that we could have any existing damage repaired within the 30 day period. We made the purchase, largely because of these false promises. As a final note, the Carmax dealership was unable to paint the bumper. They brought in a subcontractor who attempted to paint it outside TWICE, not only scratching the headlight lens, but also scratching the bumper itself and leaving heavy overspray all over the front end of the car. They finally subcontracted it to a competent bodyshop. Windshield replacement (for which we had to pay) and paint touch-up took 2 weeks. That's 14 out of the 30 days of the warranty period. I find this to be a ridiculous amount of time and proves the level of incompetence of the people with whom we were dealing. They were also very rude, condescending, angry, and insulting during the whole process. Please note that the warranty also states that it is the customer's responsibility to ensure that the repairs are completed to his own satisfaction, but doing so only made the store manager and service manager angry, defensive, and derogatory in their manner towards us. We purchased a Volvo S80, which is a wonderful car, but this experience has left us less than thrilled with the car we originally loved.
