Signed up  30 months ago and got my modem/router at a kiosk in the local mall. Was told I was purchasing the modem/router and would be billed monthly service charge for use only. 30 months later I find out I have been billed $ 7.00 a month for the modem for 30 months. I have spent $ 210.00 in rental fees for a modem with a purchase price of $49.99

This all came about when I heard about Freedom Pop and was trying to decide which was a better deal. I am paying 54.00 a month for 4g service. With Freedom Pop first month is free then premium plan is 19.99.

So I chat the Clear rep initially trying to decide if they had a lower plan to stay with them. The wimax signal has worked well so I was looking to stay on board. Until I found out I have been paying a rental fee on top of a purchase of the modem.. Easy fix you would think? Nope. The only solution Clear had for me was to pay a purchase price of $ 20.00 plus tax on top of my bill to buy out my modem!!!! Even after checking with a manager this was the best the customer service rep could offer. I asked are you sure? I just paid $ 210.00 on a 49.99 modem even if this was a legitimate rental why didnt the fee stop at the purchase price?

The rep tells me well its like paying rent on an apartment??? Say what... Of course the online statements only went back a year. Now to spend a couple of hours trying to find my original receipt then more time looking into whether this is even legal.

Absolutly legal...

Yep completly legal actually, as you dont have a router and its thier equiptment you are useing. They have a right to charge you a fee. No there is no law that states that if your renting something the moment you hit its "value" that they dont have to charge you a rental fee. Thats just sour grapes on your part. Your mad at them for charging you a legal fee that YOU didnt catch for 30 months. I swear the american consumer gets dumber by the day. Think of it this way.....What if you were the owner of this company.

Your telling everyone here you would be "fair" and let someone have your equiptment when it reached its retail value. We ALL know better then that. You would do EXACTLY as they have it setup. SO long as you are useing thier services and thier equipment they are going to charge you for that privilage. Check your cable bill.....think you should own that box on top of your TV?? Nope you "lease" it for the term of your contract. Same thing applies here. Buy out your modem from them and then buy a GOOD one somewhere.

Never see a bill. Set the account up for automatic payment. HUGE mistake....

I had no need to question the bill until I noticed a lease fee for the first time. Where it has been buried for the last 29 months is anyones guess...I will be sure to let you know after i dig thru nearly 3 years.

Why did it take you 30 months?

AUTHOR: Robert - ()

So according to this report you signed up for a service, and paid them monthly but never once in that 30 months actually looked at your bill?  Yet it is THEIR fault?

Look, if they made a mistake and you caught it after 1-2 months okay..you may have a valid complaint.  But when you don't even care enough to even spend 30 seconds to look at your bill even once during that time..sorry that is on you.

As for the legallity..of course it is legal.  You signed up for a service under certain terms, which I would be willing to bet you failed to read as well.  There is no law that says a rental fee must end as soon as you have made enough payments to cover the "retail" price.

So as some advise.  You probably should take a look at  your other credit card and bank statements to make sure you haven't signed up for anything else in the last year that you just didn't notice.
