I recommend to anyone who is considering Compass Bank to read this and unless you have an endless amount of money and you don't care if the bank takes it without any reason, find another bank!
Compass Bank charged us insufficient funds fees unfairly and unnecessarily. For example, we had funds in our account and made a transaction on a Wednesday, on Thursday @ about 6:00 we made another credit transaction (not debit) knowing a direct deposit would be made on Friday and the vendor would not be able to process the charge before Friday. None of the charges actually posted until after the direct deposit but Compass Bank saw that the transaction was made on Thursday and since the Thursday transaction was more, put that amount thru first which caused the Wednesday transaction to also bounce.
How is it fair to a customer for a bank to see that a larger transaction was made which could potentially make the account go negative and then process the larger amounts to cause more NSF charges when there were funds in the account to cover the initial expenses???
Then to make matters worse, when making a deposit a week later they placed a 2 day hold on check. this bank has the worst customer service skills. It's like that Capital One commercial, the bank from the dark ages that finds every way possible to charge fees unfairly / unnecessarily!
We have already opened a new account with another bank, although our new bank does not offer free ATM's, we will save more and will be able to use more of our money. I wish I would have never opened the account with Compass Bank, they have caused more anger than any bank is worth!

Smae thing happened to me...

The exact same thing happened to me about a year ago. I understand about not spending money you don't have, and after months of fighting with the "customer service" department who never do anything but belittle you when you call, I got no where. I was charged in excess of $800 in NSF fees , they were still taking NSF fees out after I deposited money in excess of what I spent originally.
This may be technically legal, but that does not make it right. I have switched to TCF Bank and have never had a problem. If I spend too much money over the weekend, as long as I deposit money before the charge posts then I do not get charged an NSF fee

Just read a big article in the SA paper about how compass is being purchased by "Internation banking giant Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria or BBVA is the second largest bank in Spain, owns Mexico's largest lender Bancomer". Abla espanol?

Don't spend money you do not have?

After reading your report it sounds like you are to busy trying to figure out a way to beat the system and you got burned? You had money on Wendsday to cover a transaction. Ok. Then on thursday you swipe your card as a credit like a visa for more than what was in your account? You expected that since it was a visa it would take possibly a day or so before that hits your account and you were expecting the direct deposit to cover the Thursday check card swipe. You are probably not aware that when you swipe your card no matter what day or time it goes against your account a hold is immediately placed. You cannot win. If you swipe your card before your direct deposit is literally in your account in the available balance. You will be charged everytime by every bank. it was a nice try though. granted I beleive Compass Banks OD fees are very high but the only way I know how to avoid that is dont let your account overdraw? Was your Thursday transaction really worth all this. It could not wait until you were paid the next day?
Also I beleive you did not read the new account disclosure and every bank does this: A bank may process transactions anyway they choose and more often then not they will pay the higher item and bounce all the smaller ones and charge fees. It only makes sense read the disclosure when you sign a signature card yuo are agreeing to those terms do not sign anything that you have not read? Best advice again do not overdraw your account.

Even though the merchant does not process the charge...

when you initiate the transaction a hold is placed on the funds for the amount of the purchase. So you in fact did not have enough funds to cover the transactions and overdrew your account thus the fees.
My suggestion is don't spend it until the funds are available to spend and you will never pay another NSF
