I was a member with BBVA Compass for over 10 years.  Whenever I made a deposit through the drive through with a check, funds were immediately made available.  On Sunday, I deposited the same check I always did through the ATM.  When I was charged 3 NSF fees for checks that hit my bank on Monday, even though the check was deposited the day before, I was told that checks have two days to clear.  When I asked why funds are available immediately if I go through the drive through all they could say is that its regulations.

Not a way to keep long term members.  I am going during my lunch hour to close my account

ATM deposits

AUTHOR: Theresa - (USA)

POSTED: Sunday, March 05, 2017

ATM deposits are immediate. This is from the federal reserve. See attachment. Its at the very top because I was making copy for notice rules...but atm deposits are concidered received on day of deposit. Best thing anyone can do is file a complaint with the federal reserve...they regulate all banks.

Question

POSTED: Tuesday, April 22, 2014

When you reconciled your bank account how much money was in your account?  How about your check register?? How much did that show was in your account? You can close your account and go somewhere else but unless you accept responsibility for your finances this will happen at any bank or credit union. Learn to manage your money!

And NO I do not work for them or any banking establishment. Debit cards are not credit cards!

Or better yet...

How about taking a few minutes to learn how to manage your account.

First of all the ONLY reason you got an Overdraft Fee on Monday is because you spent money you did NOT have currently available in your account.

Next, the reason that the funds were not immediatly available on Sunday, is because Sunday is NOT a banking day.  So any deposit made on Sunday(well actually Friday after the Cut-Off time) will be posted as if it was made on Monday(or Tuesday if Monday is a Holiday).

Now, you can come here and swear up and down that it was NEVER that way and no other bank does that.  But I can guarantee you that if you go into ANY bank they will tell you the exact same thing.  Oh and if they don't...please post the name of the person you talked to, the bank, and branch.  As I am sure that their management would be very interested in the mis-information being given out to future customers.

Which brings us to the next point.  It is also unlikey that any checks were not made available immediatly(cash yes..checks most likely no).  They may make a portion of the check available that day(usually $100) but anything more than that MAY be subject to an additional hold.  You may have never noticed this because you never spent more than you had, or perhaps they posted the credit at the end of the day before your debits.

Of course all of this would be mute if you didn't spend more than you had available in your account.  Which can be easily taken care of by keeping an accurate written register knowing exactly what you have spent.

Again I could care less if you believe me or not.  But just when ever you go to your new bank be sure to ask them about their Funds Availability Policy.  Just don't be shocked if it sounds very familar to what was posted above.

The same at other banks

Just watch out... You will have the exact same issue again if you still believe what you believe now. It is indeed the regulation as their answer.

Also, you mentioned in your report that you use "drive trough" to deposit, but this one time you use "ATM" instead. They are 2 different methods. The "drive through" means the bank is still opened and the person who did the transaction would be able to authorize (close) the transaction before the business day ends. The ATM does not do that for you but simply records the data, so the transaction may be authorized the next business day.

If you deposit (especially a check) on Sunday, never expect to have all money available on Monday even though it said that your fund is available. There is always at least 24 hours delay when a transaction between 2 accounts that do not belong to the same person occurs (and could be even longer with 2 different person in the same bank or 2 different banks).
