About a month ago I closed one of my accounts at Compass making sure to go down to the bank, fill out the necessary paperwork, called Compass PC to cancel my account on Billpay and also went online and removed the account out of my billpay accounts.
Around the first of this month i sent 11 payments via billpay to various doctors. When the doctors presented the payments to my bank for payment my bank (compass) tried to take them out of my CLOSED account instead of taking them out of my currently OPEN account. Compass sent the checks back to the doctors saying my account was closed and that they could not honor the checks. AGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!
I spent all day on the phone today calling the doctors to go over any charges that they charged for the checks being returned. Then I called the bank (talked to four people) trying to get them to see that it was THEIR error, not mine and to get them to cover the charges. Compass said they could only return charged funds to me if the doctors had taken them out of my account. HOW WOULD THE DOCTORS TAKE THEM OUT OF A CLOSED ACCOUNT?!
Finally my local branch agreed that it was their error so they wrote a letter for me to give to the doctors explaining that it was their error, not mine. I went down and picked up the letter, recalled all the doctors, got fax numbers, wrote out cover letters for each and then faxed the cover letters and the bank letter to each one. hopefully the docs will remove their charges or I will end up being responsible for them. I am done using compass bank billpay. In fact, I am done with Compass altogether.
This is the fourth problem I have had with Compass. I have several stories of massive NSF's withdrawn from my account but that's another report for another day :(
