I f*cking hate Compass bank. I've known for awhile that they liked to rip people off, they've tried it with me before. Now I have proof. Over the weekend of November the 18th to the 21st we had a balance of $7.95. On Sunday night, my mife put $5.02 into her gas tank to make it home from work. That would have left us with $2.93 in our account on Monday.
On Monday the 21st we had a direct deposit of $918.76 go through. Our balance should have been $921.69. I called Compass bank Monday just to make sure we didn't have an overdraft and I was told that after pending amounts we didn't have one.
Here is where it gets crazy so try to follow. I was charged an $8.00 service fee on the 18th. Therefore my account balance was -0.05 cents because we only had $7.95 in the bank. My wife got $5.02 in gas Sunday night which caused a $36.00 overdraft. The $5.02 charge and the $918.76 deposit both posted on the same day, Monday. Then the overdraft of $36.00 for the $5.02 on Sunday posted on Tuesday.
The funny thing about this whole thing is this: I have free f*cking checking! I was charged an $8.00 service fee charged to my account when it was at $7.95. Therefore I received an overdraft for the $5.02 and they didn't bother to tell me about the overdraft until Tuesday hoping I would have more overdrafts!
Compass will NEVER admit to a mistake, it is always YOUR fault. For all you dumbf*cks who like to stick up for Compass No mistakes were made on my part. It doesn't matter how much I have left in the bank. I have free checking and I was charged a bogus service fee. When Compass saw the chance to rape me, they took advantage. I am in the process of trying to recover the $44.00 Compass owes me.
Why is it that when any normal person steals they are called theives and put in jail, but when a bank steals it is called part of what you signed up for?

Under $10 and using a Debit Card

There are many things that can cause an overdraft in the banking industry and someone above posted a very good one with regard to the gas station putting a hold on at the pump fuel sales.
But the bigger question I have is why did you let your account go down so low? I try to make sure I keep a minimum of $50 in my Compass account (which I have had since 1999) and I have had 3 instances where we had trouble brewing but with a simple phone call and without the use of explicit language I was able to get them to reverse the charges.
Try calling them. You may end up being surprised with the result.
Al, in Dallas.

Gas stations are famous for putting a larger amount on your card then the actual amount for a few days until the true amount makes it's way through the system. Say if you pump $22, they may put a "hold" for $50. I think it happens at the pump and not when you go inside. At least that's what the instructions said when I got a $50 gift card from visa. It said to pay inside, otherwise if I paid at the pump it might ding the card for more then the $50. So compass might not be at fault. Anytime I see this "free" anything I know they're gonna try and screw me on all their other services. It's just a come on. Try and find out if the station dinged you for more then the $5.02.

Did Compass Bank tell you what the service charge was for?
I also have free checking, but that only means I do not pay a service charge for not maintaining a minimum balance. I would still be charged a monthly fee for a check card (if I had one), a fee for using a teller if I could have used an ATM for the transaction, etc.
Look through your terms and conditions for your account. If Compass bank charged you a fee they shouldn't have, point it out to them when you talk to them about the fee and overdraft charges.
Good luck.
