Compass Bank decides after a year of business to change up. I walked into the a Compass Bank I'd never been in before and freaked out when I noticed the kid serving me had a white shirt on that had never seen an iron, a tie pulled down like a Stock Broker after a big hit. He took the business check and I left. After 3 days as always I preceded to pay my bills only to find out that the kid at the bank had the discretion to put a hold on my check for up to 45 days if he so desired
I racked up 13 NSF charges like that, not including the good old bounced check charges to come. Like another person on this site I was hit by the debit courtesy extension in which you're allowed extend your debit card so you can pay the $38.00 that follows. Call that Lesson No.1 and Lesson No. 2 was when the kid got me.
Well I went out to save my butt and pulled $500.00 cash out when the bank said they'd do nothing to help me, thank goodness they paid most of the 6 checks I had outstanding.
I think I broke even after using there extended debit to buy a used printed for my computer. No respect for you or the recession. Watch Out for Compass Bank they will do you good if you left them.

If you have in fact never dealt with Compass or even "been inside a Compass bank", then you obviously have never been victimized by them. So I ask you, why are you refuting very legitimate complaints when you honestly have no idea what you are talking about?

Do you mean me? I can assure you that I have never even seen a Compass Bank, much less been in one. I guess if you can't attack the message, you can always attack the messenger.

Compass decides when to make funds available!!!

This very same thing happened to me. It is INDEED at the discretion of the banker whether to place a hold or make funds available immediately. They have admitted that to me. I was not granted the "courtesy extension" unfortunately, which just goes to show you that there is no consistency in service at this bank. The only consistency is that they will fee you to death every chance they get, and they have tricky practices that make it possible when you should have NEVER been overdrawn to begin with. Once it starts, it's a vicious cycle and the money you put in the account to try to get out of the hole is just eaten up in more fees. Compass bank, you should be ashamed at taking advantage of your customers, especially in these tough times when many people are living paycheck to paycheck. We don't have the luxury to wait for when and if you decide to make our funds available. I suggest you change your practices to hold on to the few customers you have left. Oh, and you can always tell which of these posts are from "Compass insiders". Give it a rest people! You are not fooling anyone, and in fact just making Compass look even more conniving and greedy!

Check Holds
AUTHOR: Ken - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Thursday, March 12, 2009
Check hold limits are set by law, so no, the 'kid' has neither the discretion nor the ability set hold your deposit for 45 days.
If your deposit got an extended hold at all (meaning it was held for longer than it normally would have been) it has to be for very specific reasons: a new customer, a repeat overdrafter, or certain types of checks which tend to be a problem to collect.
In almost every case the hold is placed by the system and not by the teller who processed the deposit.
When an extended hold is placed, the bank is required to notify you within a business day that a hold was placed. This notice can be mailed to you.
What you need to do is ask the bank if an extended hold was placed on your deposit, and why. If they did place an extended hold, but did not notify you, you are entitled to ask for your overdraft fees back.
