Back in May of this year(2016), my daughter asked me for help setting up an account with DISH Network. I was told specifically that the card would only be used that one time on her account, and after it was setup, DISH would remove/block my card from being charged. I never signed up for an auto-pay or auto-debit feature. I was comfortable because the rep assured me more than once that my card would not be charged any further. To be clear, neither my name or SSN is on her account at all. It is all her information, her SSN, address, her debit card, etc.

The rep explained it to me this way. I am paraphrasing.. "Let's say it's my birthday and a family member wanted to pay my phone bill that month as a gift. When the next month comes and my bill is due again, they cant go and charge that family member's card because they are not authorized to do so."  It sounded so simple.

So 4 months go by and I was not even thinking about DISH network, but yesterday, I go to pay my rent and I'm told that the transaction failed. I checked online and was able to see that DISH had taken over $400+ from my account. I immediately called DISH and explained that I don't have an account with DISH. I also explained that I helped my daughter months ago while she was opening her DISH account and was told on more than one occasion that my card was not linked to her account.

This is what I was told by the CSR. Again,I am paraphrasing.. "I see that your card was attached to her account when she opened it initially, I also see where she has added her card information later and made some payments. I believe that when they were not able to debit last month's payment from her card, the system automatically debited the amount from the only other card that was used on her account. So, although you were told that your card would not be linked to her account, the block was not setup by the person who told you intially. I have JUST placed a block on your card, so you no longer have to worry about anymore charges."

So apparentley although I was told that my card was not still linked, IT WAS. Although, a block should've been placed to prevent further charges to my card, IT WAS NOT. The block was literally set into place yesterday 8/01/16 after they took $400+ that I need.

I am on a fixed income and in roughly 3 days, the process of eviction will be started. All I need from DISH is to reverse/refund those charges or I am on the street. I am not liable for these charges, I did not agree to have my money taken!

UPDATE: Charles McKay of DISH was able to remedy this issue very quickly. I would like to close this case, but I am not sure how to do. The issue had been resolved.

Blame Game?

AUTHOR: - ()

POSTED: Saturday, August 06, 2016

So let me get this straight. Your only reason for replying was to play the blame game? Right? Maybe you don't get it, but your reply was pretty condescending. There was no consideration given to the fact that my version could be 100% accurate and mistakes were made by the DISH reps.

Your reply is a textbook example of how a guilty party would go about defending themselves. You also make a blanket assumption that all DISH employee's actually follow the rules 100% of the time. As I understand it, some DISH reps can get bonuses if they acquire a certain amount of new customers. In that case, it would be beneficial for a rep to withhold certain information that may be a deal breaker for new customers. But, I'm sure that in your world, they would never do such a thing.

Also, in my initial complaint, I tried to give a basic synopsis of what transpired. I did this solely to avoid an extremely lengthy post. There's a possibility that if I were to post the whole story, you would have a better idea of what happened.

Also, I am not 100% sure that you are an actual DISH employee. If you are, you are probably low on the totem pole which makes you irrelevant to me. I say that because instead of playing the blame game, a real representative would try and offer a remedy. As far as Im concerned, there's no need to reply unless you can offer a solution or direct me to someone who can.

Not everyone tells the truth

If you had gone to www.dish.com/service-agreements/ you will find in the contract the early termination fee. What ever card was given to them at the time to qualify. They will charge the card if the customer breaks the agreement. Dish will automatically charge, an early termination fee to your Dish account  or your Qualifying card (as described below), if any, at Dish's option. I'm guessing for that reason they couldn't put a block on your card, because it was the Qualiying Card on the account. It all comes down on how their computer was programmed.

I realize that someone may have not fully explained the purpose of the card to you and your daughter. I've told everyone that called me what the card was used for.  I even gave in a packet a blank copy of the contract to the customer.

After the installation I even gave the customer a chance to read the contract before signing it. But sadly most of them refused to read it and just signed it. So when the installer finished the installation and before he left. He handed to your daughter either a paper contract or a electronic tablet that had the contract stored in it. She should have taken the time to read it and ask questons. But the installer was to have left your daughter a copy of the contract she signed. I was required to by Dish Network's  Dealer Agreement that I had to sign.

So if your card got charged 400.00, then your daughtger must have broken her agreement with Dish Network. I'm sorry to say, but your daughter is the one your going to have to get your money from. Did she not call to warn you that she broke her agreement with Dish Network.

The only thing that might be in your favor, is that Dish was to in some way notify the customer 15 days before the card got charged. You see back in 2010 46 State Attorney General office's had sued Dish Network. They have some guide lines they have to follow  and their Dealers also.
