In April 2011, I cancelled my Dish Network account (my contract was over.)  The representative informed me I had to climb on my roof and remove the satellite and return it along with the other equipmet or I would be charged.  I asked, "Why they could not send out an installer to remove the satellite and pick up the equipment?"  I was informed that the installers were not allowed to received returned equipment but she would send me a couple boxes and mailing labels for my convenience.

I returned all the equipment as requested and on time.

Now I am receiving a bill from Afni, Inc for $32.10.  When I called to explain that  I don't owe Dish anymore money, I was told that I owed for return shipping fees.  Keep in mind that this was not my equipment, I paid to lease it.  I also had to pay to have it repaired if it messed up, which I also feel is a huge scam since it is not my equipment!  I explained that this bit of information about charging me for shipping was not included in any of my paperwork nor was I informed of it.  In fact, I was sent prepaid postage boxes to ship the equipment back in at UPS.  Why even bother sending postage paid boxes if you plan to charge the customer for shipping?  Maybe we could have found a cheaper way to ship the boxes had we known we were paying the shipping in the first place??????

Seems to me that this is a huge scam to make extra money.  It doesn't make sense in the first place.  And you shouldn't charge customers for something without making sure that it is included in the initial contract with the customer....and certainly not if you don't at least explain it to them prior to charging them.

So BEWARE if you plan to be a dish network customer.  I had been planning to return to Dish as soon as my contract with Direct TV was up in a few months because overall Dish is cheaper for the service after all the freebies.  But this bad business practice and sending me to collection.  I am getting notices in the mail over money that I didn't even know I owed. And when I call Afni Inc to talk with them about it, twice, they are rude and ugly to me.   So be warned that this is how Dish works with it's customers.  They will just charge you for things that you didn't know about and send you to collections! Be warned!

Mel,

Your post caught my attention as I found it interesting and wanted to provide some clarification for anyone else who may happen to stumble across it.  We would never require you to climb on top of your roof to retrieve the LNBF (the 'eye' piece) off the satellite.  We would never want you to put yourself in harm's way to where you risk injury.  If you feel unsafe doing getting that piece down, you can simply notify us so that we can simply void that from your account so that we know we're not expecting it back from you.  That is not a problem at all and we perfectly understand.  As for the shipping of our equipment back to us, please understand that you are by no means required to use our method of shipping to return our equipment to us but we make the option available if you do choose to.  In fact, while our shipping rates are the most cost-effective to use compared to what others' charge, not everyone uses our method so we don't feel that it's fair to increase everyone's monthly rates to cover the cost of this shipping.
