I started hating Dish Network a few years ago when I ran a small business. I had three phone lines and Dish flooded my lines with pre-recorded sales pitches. I got probably ten of their calls a week. I never got a single call from DirecTv. Dish was really desperate for sales. Recently I heard that Dish was rated as one of the worst companies in the US to work for.
Today a young man came to my front door and claimed that he represented both Dish Network and DirecTv. Considering DirecTv's current vitriolic advertising campaign against Dish, I found this hard to believe. The man was wearing a shirt that said "Dish" in big red letters and he had an ID badge from Dish Network. The only sign that he might be from DirecTv was a lanyard with that company's logo.
The salesman started to give me a sales pitch but I cut him off by saying that we already had DirecTv. I thought that would be enough to send him on his way. Instead, he asked if we had the DVR and when I said yes, he asked if I knew they were charging extra per month for that. He asked about some other feature and pointed out once again that we were paying extra for that, too.
About then I started to smell a rat. Why would a salesmen from DirecTv disparage his company's product? Unless, he really does not represent DirecTv. It was pretty clear from the conversation that what he wanted to do was to get me to drop DirecTv and sign up for Dish. How desparate is Dish Network when it has to go door-to-door pretending to be someone else? I slammed the door in his face.

Not all door to door reps are liers!

I used to be a Dish Network Retailer. I started out selling door to door 1st. Not all reps lie. And everyone must sign a form. There is always the fine print. Caveat Emptor! I personally would not sign up for anything unless what i was signing up for was in writing. If the sales rep tells me something, it better be in writing or i would not sign. And yes, some retailers sell both D-TV AND Dish. I had the option but i sold only Dish Network at the time. All companies fight to have something better than the other.
So as a retailer it makes sense to offer both. You like potatoes, I like pototoes. In the end, Dish, D-TV, and Cable all bring shows to your television. It's the different features, equipment/technology, and pricing that we decide which one we want. The direct sales approach is proven effective. Some folks may just happen to get bombarded from one certain company all in a certain time frame. If you were the owner of Dish Network, you would not be complaining about it. lol
All buyers need to be informed and do their homework before buying anything. 90% of Americans eat chicken. But less than 2% of them know exactly how many chemicals are used to clean the chicken.

DOOR TO DOOR LIERS!

I've sold magazines and cleaners door to door, and the only thing that I or anyone that is selling anything is interested in is SELLING! Cable equipment is not 12 -20 years old that is a rediculous LIE, technology demands new equipment, just like that old pentium 4 computer that used to be fast is now obsolete and can barely keep up with your phones capabilities.
Never trust a door to door salesman with anything, they will say whatever it takes to close the deal, if they don't they don't get paid, so the plan for them is to sell you whatever it is that you don't have. i.e., if you have dish they will sell you cable or directv. We just got an infestation of them in Albuquerque, that is why I am on this page.

Maybe I can help explain

I have no doubt the guy that came to your door does infact represent directv as well as Dish. Here's how that works because I work for a company that does the same thing. My boss goes to dish network to become an authorized retailer by filling out paperwork. Then he went to Directv to do the same thing. In my bosses case he went a step further by going to the local cable company, filling out paperwork in order to sell them as well.
There is nothing in either of their contracts that says we cant sell their competitor so we do. So in my case I sell all the major telecommunication companies door to door. Naturally just about everybody has tv service already. So my goal is to get someone to switch their provider. Why would I do that? the MAIN reason is because it saves them money. Why pay full price for something when you can get all the same channels for a cheaper price. The second reason is it almost always upgrades their equipment. So if you had directv, your equipment is at least 2 years old. Technology changes fast. Why not get the latest and greatest, brand new equipment as well. Just about all cable companies use equipment that is 12-20 years old!
Now all the cut throat advertising you see on commercials is marketing directly from the company. The calls you get at your business everyday, i dont know where they come from. I would guess from another authorized retailer in another state that speciallizes in business' by call over the phone, actually its most likely several companies like that because youre getting so many calls.
So the guy who came to your door had no idea that you were getting so many calls. Nor did he know you had directv. Going door to door isnt the most glorious job obviously, but it has been proven to be the most efficient way of getting sales. Like I tell some of my customers, you can give your business to me because Im actually off my a*s working for my paycheck instead of sitting in an office twiddling my thumbs hoping and waiting for a phone call! Or in your case waiting for someone to answer an automated message.
