I subscribed to Dish Network services 5/2008 for a 2 year contract. Approximately 6 months later they raised my rates in several areas. When I complained, they said they had the right to raise my rates if their provider rates went up. Now recently, they sent out a notice that they've renamed their packages and they did it again. This time it's a smaller amount but you do the math - # of customers x $1 per month and they make a bundle. How can a company raise rates when a consumer is in a contract that has an Early Termination Fee if canceled prior to the 2 years? It would mean that during the contract span, they could do whatever they want, which is what they're doing. That is illegal in any state!!! I will definitely be reporting them to the FTC and I believe a class action is definitely necessary. Ripping people off is a no no.

#2 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Its in the contract.

AUTHOR: Sir B - (United States of America)

Hello, as a former employee of DISH, perhaps I can provide some insight into your issue.

First, many people sign contracts without reading them. If you read the contract, it CLEARLY states that DISH Network reserves the right to at any time change the channels in your package, and/or the rates/prices. If you didn't agree with that, you should NOT have gone through with the installation and NOT signed the contract. Any rate increase is based on the MARKET, not because DISH is trying to rip you off, and DISH still remains the cheapest paid TV provider vs. DIRECTV and Comcast even after rate increases (by all of these companies by the way). ANY paid TV company reserves the right to change prices/channels. Its not just DISH. And unfortunately, if you signed the contract, then you really have no arguing power against it. There is NOTHING illegal about it.

I started working at DISH in September of 2009 and stopped working there earlier this month. So anything that happened before then, I cannot answer, however I can cover information on what did increase during the February updates when the packages were renamed from Classic to America's Top.

The actual packages were only renamed and DID NOT increase in price. In fact one of the packages (America's Everything Pack) actually decreased.

The DVR service charge changed slightly. It used to be that you had to pay $5.98 for EACH DVR reciever you had. For instance, if you had 3 DVR receivers, you were paying $17.94. AFTER the changes, you paid a flat $6 monthly for DVR no matter how many DVR receivers you have. You could still have 3 DVR receivers and still only pay $6 a month for the DVR service.

The old DISH Home Protection Plan (DHPP) used to be $5.99 a month. It was renamed to the Service Plan (SP) and changed to a flat $6 monthly. The benefits also changed. Under DHPP, instead of paying $99 for a technician to come out to your home, because you had the plan, you paid either $49, $29, or $0 depending on certain factors. Under the new service plan, you paid either $15, or $0, whereas people without the plan paid $95. So the benefits of this plan actually got better. And as always, it covered UPS TWO-DAY shipping for anything DISH might have to ship to you like a new remote or receiver. And it covers those replacements so that they are always FREE, unless you abused your equipment.

Monthly receiver fees. This did actually INCREASE. Under the old plan you paid $5 for an SD receiver monthly and $10 for an HD receiver monthly for your SECOND reciever and up. If you only had one reciever, then you paid NO FEES monthly. Under the new policies, it was still that if you only had one reciever whether it was a single or dual tuner, you paid NOTHING monthly for it. However, for your second receiver onwards, it became $7 for a SOLO reciever. $10 for SOLO DVR reciever, $14 for DUO reciever, and $17 for a DUO DVR receiver. This is probably the source of your increase in 2009, though I don't know what your setup is.

Hope this information helped.
