I have a website where my designer stated she used pictures that were free. That was about three years ago. Well, I got my threatening settlement demand from Gettyimages, a company I never heard of before. They said I used an unauthorized image and they wanted 875.00 today.
It did not seem right so I decided to google gettyimages scam. There they are, making money off of innocent people. As I can see just because I took every image off my website that will not be the end. It seems our society has gone crazy and any way to make a buck is okay today, the world of "entitlement" --- Okay, if my designer made a mistake, okay I will take the picture down.
I agree with a lot of the other writers, we need to make this company known for who they really are, all united we can bring them down, people just need to be educated. If I knew about this scam, I would not have taken any chances and removed all pictures I did not take myself from my website. Using others' pictures when you think they are free and then find out they are not is not worth any chances. I now need to contact a lawyer.

Getty Tactics = Extortion

I'm a sales rep, Corp allowed and encouraged the access and use of all images from the consultant handbook. Our web designer used images from Corp website, still on the site, with permission.
A year later, Getty is demanding $875 from me.. a mother of 5 with a side job....
Getty will take no explanation, just recites various takes on law... image rights and such.
The artist has rights, no doubt. Where there is no intent to steal there is no crime. Theft is a specific intent crime. Additionally, the civil standard is preponderance of evidence.
Thank Getty for the image copyright info. Now take it up with Corp, not a stay at home mom making small cash for kids play dates.
Your tactics smell.
To everyone else, avoid Getty, Do Not Pay. Let them come get it. I look forward to a day in court with these folks. There will be no bullied settlement, I'll do jail time before paying a dime to this corrupt company

Property Rights

Sorry you feel you got dinged by Getty.
Getty sells images and their use on behalf of photographers, many of these photographers work very hard to make their images. I know if any of my images were being used without compensation I would be very upset. So the flip side of your rip-off is that by using someone else's image you were ripping them off.
Normally removal of the image is satisfactory. The real culprit here I believe is the person that setup your site and used an unauthorized image.
Just like writers we photographers are also artists and companies like Getty protect our rights.
