In the spring of 2002, I enrolled at IADT, a visual communications school in Pittsburgh. I was seventeen when I signed up, and had no idea that I had to watch for con artists on every corner. When school started in late summer, I did not have a professor for two of my classes, and another one was so full that not all of the students had chairs.
I attended for three days of classes, did not see any major improvement, and decided to quit. I went to the office of the guy who had been showing me around, and told him that I wouldn't be coming back the next day. He said ok, and that he would take my name off of the register. A couple of months later I got the bill for $800 through the student loan people. This didn't seem too unreasonable, so I thought I'd just pay it and that would be the end of it.
Now, four years later, I need to get my transcripts from IADT, and they claim that I owe them over $4000, and they want it paid in cash before they'll give me my transcripts. They are saying that I attended for an entire semester, and they printed me attendance reports that say the same thing.
I need to get the transcripts, or I won't be able to attend a real school in the fall.
I went to work in a factory after i quit the school, and the human resources manager at the factory (who happens to be a very nice guy) was able to find documentation that shows I could not have been in school on several of the days that IADT claims I was there. I was miles away, assembling windows. Doesn't this sound like outright fraud?
If anyone has advice for me, if a lawyer would like to help me , or if someone has more info for me, post a comment here. Thanks!

Yes, I expect transcripts.

Yes, I expect transcripts, because PA state law says that I need them for all schools that I've attended (even if only for three days) if I want to attend a state college. I applied for admission to the Indiana Univ. of Penn., and need the transcripts by the time they stop accepting new students. As for question about formal withdrawal, I went into the office of a person who was supposed to be fairly high up at the school, told him I no longer wanted to attend, and he told me he would take me off the register.
He did nothing and said nothing to lead me to believe that I had to do anything more formal.
But that's not really the most important issue. IADT printed me attendance records that show I was in class on multiple days when I could not have been there. I have solid documentation from an employer on one day and a police department on another day that both conflict with the fraudulent IADT attendance records. Has anyone else ever had this problem?

"I attended for three days of classes, did not see any major improvement, and decided to quit. I went to the office of the guy who had been showing me around, and told him that I wouldn't be coming back the next day. "
You expect transcripts for THREE days of school?? You didn't stay long enough to learn anything, not earning any credit so there is no information to provide on a transcript.
As for a $4000.00 debt, you said you simply told them you wouldn't be coming back. Did you formally disenroll?? If there are formal disenrollment policies and you did not follow them under the enrollment agreement you may find yourself liable for the full tuition.
