I used to work for Jackson Hewitt and after I quit I felt like going to the nearest church to repent my sins. Jackson Hewitt employees are encouraged---nay, required---to make fraudulent claims, lies by omission, anything to get that customer in to pay the ridiculous, exorbitant fees that they charge. Besides the fact that they charge $85 at minimum for even a one W-2 form (which anyone with a three-digit IQ can do on a 1040EZ in ten minutes), they also encouraged us to add the Gold Guarantee ($39) even when the customer doesn't request it and gloss over the fact that the customer is signing a disclosure form saying we went over it with them and gave us a percentage of returns goal that we'd be disciplined for not meeting, and of course the sin of omission that refund anticipation loans carry finance charges that can be avoided.
We were especially encouraged to do this with Hispanic customers who could be expected by dint of their lack of English fluency not to know how to question us---just figure the fees, tell them what their refund was after all the fees were taken out, then make them sign all the forms (which were, of course, in English only.) Just a disgusting company all around in a disgusting industry where these practices are standard.
I would strongly advise people to either do their taxes themselves (if you've got a fairly simple return that can be done on a 1040EZ or 1040A) or to seek the services of a qualified tax professional (IRS Enrolled Agent or CPA), not someone making fast food wages (I was paid $8.25 an hour) with minimal training who will commit fraud to keep their job.

#2 UPDATE Employee
Jackson Hewitt requires employees to file fraudulent returns
AUTHOR: dtgrmi - (United States of America)

I accepted a tax preparer position at Jackson Hewitt in Grand Rapids, MI. They literally pull people off the street with no knowledge of taxes and give them 8 hours of substandard training to learn how to imput data into the computer like a monkey. Fortunately I do have an education in taxation. I went through the return with my first client and recognized that he was attempting to commit tax fraud. I asked for the additional information that was required by law and the client said I did not need it, that nobody else in the office has ever asked for it in the past. He stormed off all pissed off. The store manager was pissed. She said that it is not my place to refuse any return even if I know that it is fraudulent. She stated that if the State or IRS have a problem with the return then the State or IRS will send the taxpayer a letter. I am not to turn away a paying customer. Well, as the tax prepare who signs the return, I can be fined, penalized or jailed for knowingly filing fraudulent returns. The fees that Jackson Hewitt charge are unconscionable. They prey on the poor and uneducated. They encourage people to commit tax fraud. When I called the IRS to discuss the situation with them - they confirmed that I will be held liable for a pattern of filing fraudulent returns. They then went on to say that Jackson Hewitt was probably the worst offender of tax fraud in the business. They stated that the legal cases against Jackson Hewitt are numerous and that dozens of former Jackson Hewitt employees are in prison for fraudulent tax preparation that was required by Jackson Hewitt to keep their jobs. Aside from the possibility of going to jail for filing fraudulent returns, I just cannot understand how anybody can work at Jackson Hewitt who has a conscious. Preying on the poor, the uneducated, minorities and helping people commit tax fraud is just downright unethical and immoral. I guess there are plenty of people who need a job so bad that they can live with it.

A Blighted Ghost-town and State

Reno and Nevada already have a bad reputation in the national media; a talk with home insurers confirms people and businesses are fleeing Reno and Nevada. These shocking behaviors by Reno businesses and Nevada public employees give a further black-eye to Reno and Nevada which are increasingly becoming and known as A Blighted Ghost-town and State. Jackson Hewitt / Tim has been notorious for years for their extortion, blackmail, civil rights violations, fraud, income tax evasion, money laundering, abuses, perjury, and false documents, and yet have never been held acountable for their illegal and unethical behaviors due to corruption - they pay bribes to public employees. Like those at the Nevada AG and Washoe County DA.
