Jefferson Capital Systems, LLC sent me a letter claiming I owed $1626.27 to American General/More Card. This is not a debt that I am aware of and it did not show on my credit report (my credit score is 794-I have no bad debt). I called the company and the lady said the debt was from 1993 and she asked me for my ss#.I gave her the last 4 digits only and she said that was the number she had. I know now I should have asked her for the numbers. In any event she said I could dispute the debt..I told her I would not dispute a debt I didn't have. She said I would be "reported" if they did not hear from me in 30 days. This company offered to settle my debt by giving me a credit card (Emblem Master Card). I would have to pay in $407 to qualify then they would apply the TOTAL of my debt to the card which would have -0- interest and I would have $82 of available credit. Unbelievable! These people should be shut down for mail fraud. I have retained thier paperwork in case there is any legal action against these people.

Jefferson Capital does have a suit filed against it by the FTC for "Deceptive Credit Card Marketing."
I recieved a similar letter about a debt that was paid in full and closed back in 2003. Because I realize that this company's threats may scare other people into actually sending them money and signing up for this ridiculous offer, I filed claims against them with the Better Business Bureau and the FTC.
Obviously you were smart enough not to fall for it but I would suggest that you consider filing claims with the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) and the Federal Trades Commission (www.ftc.gov). As I said the FTC already filed suit againt Jefferson Capital, but the more claims they and the BBB recieve the more evidence they have and the more likely it will be that they can either shut down this company or hit them with so many fines that they will be forced to shut themselves down.
