I am an ex-employee of NCA (National Credit Acceptance, Inc.) and I left because it became a living nightmare! NCA uses different names as well and you may hear the company names "Columbia Credit Services" and "Direct Legal Services". Mind you they are all "Seperate Businesses". All under one roof. They also have "Check Point" in the same building.

Well, I worked for Direct Legal Services. That section of the building is the "law office". There are two attorneys who aren't always there. The person who truly runs it is the manager who has no real legal background. She's not exactly a manager but more of a dictator who rules with terror! No one exactly knows what her job is but I can tell you her job description!

-Conducts daily meetings in order to kill time
-Monitors employees computer usage from her cubicle
-Tells employees who and who not to interact with (I had colleagues tell me that Michelle, the manager, told them who and who not to speak with if they wanted to get ahead at NCA)!!!

So my story starts when I "fell under Michelle's radar" as other employees and managers call it. I had been there for 6 months and my review was way passed due. The employee handbook states I will get one after 4 months. So I do what others told me not to do (out of fear) and I asked her for my review. She avoided me for a good 2 weeks which according to my colleagues was the routine. So finally I do something wrong and I come in late to work. BINGO! Now she had a reason to talk to me! Again, what others describe as the routine!

So Michelle tries to avoid reviews because she gets a lump sum from the CEO of NCA and everything else. Out of that lump she must pay her employees. Whatever is left over is hers. See why she tries to avoid raises? So anyway, because I was late that day, I had a warning. Then the next day the computers were being "randomly checked" and they happend to find my Word.doc opened on my screen because I had been doing my homework on my break. I had left it open because on my lunch in 30 minutes I would continue.

Well, someone happend to log on to check and did a print screen of my homework to show it to me. Another slap on the wrist for me! But what about my review? Still no word. So I had doctor appointments and I would go on my lunches and any time after that I asked to make up by staying late. Mind you, I never had to make up more than 30 minutes to an hour. And I only did it for the company, not because I needed to.

So one day my manager pulls me into yet another meeting to tell me I was not allowed to make up time anymore. I said fine and went back to my desk. After another appointment, Michelle (the manager) pulls me into yet another meeting to tell me she was writing me up for NOT MAKING UP TIME! I repeated what was said to me and she ignored me and had me sign. I didn't want to loose my job so I signed! Unfortunatley, because of the write up, I had to wait 90 days for my review! I told other colleagues this story and everyone would just let me know that either happend to them or someone else in the company they know. Others would say things like,"Oh my God that's TYPICAL Michelle!"

The last straw was when I came back from lunch one day and I saw her, another manager, and a coworker in a meeting. On our last break, he pulled me outside to tell me what had happend. He told me that they kept asking him if he new "anything" about me, what I do on my breaks, and if he's seen me taking long lunches. Um, what the hell!? Michelle told him that if he knew something and didn't tell her, that was insubordinaton. I think she needs to re-read the definition! That was the last straw for me. I had had enough.

So when I knew I was leaving, I went to HR and made my complaint. So many others have been too scared to go. I've known 2 others who have gone but have left so sad because they know not enough people are willing to back it up out of fear of retallitation which Michelle is known to do!

The last week I was there she sent out an e-mail stating that since the attorney would be out on vacation, court docs that needed his signature could go to her and she would sign for him! I don't he knows she would forge his signature. That's complete unauthorized practice of law! She's not an attorney, has no bar number or anything! I feel bad for all the debtors they have judgments and liens against because it's not even an attorney going through each case and doing the paperwork. The attorneys they have there are rarely there. When they are there, they're there to give legal advice and go to court. The attorney does sign a lot of paperwork but the fact that she signs a majority of the paperwork, in my opinion, doesn't make any of these suits legit!

So yeah, that whole place is a joke. And the CEO is just as bad. He calls his employees idiots and stupid. When talking about an employee at a meeting he called her "The Indian Girl". He asked a hispanic employee if he got his outfit at the flea market and laughed at him! They have told people who speak Spanish that it's ILEGAL to speak the language at work but yet expect us to interpret and translate! They're not even attorneys! They just act like they are!
