I became disabled and unable to work in May of 2004. With no income, I was unable to make payments on the car I purchased through Onyx Acceptance. Fortunately, I purchased disability insurance from American National Insurance. I immediately filed a claim. I was sent a number of forms which I forwarded to my doctor. The claims were sent to Onyx, although they denied receiving them. I received another set of forms and sent them to American National. Months dragged by with no response, until Onyx collectors began hassling me.

I spoke to both Onyx and American National and made it clear they were aware of the disability claim. Onyx promised to lay off until the claim was decided. But in January, after yet another round of forms for doctors, Onyx repossessed the car. A few weeks later, the claim was approved and American National sent Onyx a check for over $4,200. But Onyx never acknowledged receiving the funds. In fact, they were claiming more money (including repossession fees, late fees and other fees) was due. American National has since sent another payment to Onyx. My account is fully up to date but I have no vehicle. Onyx, by the way, sold my car at a ridiculous price at auction. It's my view that Onyx improperly repossessed the car. Further, their collection agents were more than obnoxious, calling at all hours and making many threats. One of their agents said I should expect to be arrested by police in my town because Onyx had made a complaint against me. I checked with the police department and this what completely untrue.

Am I right or am I wrong. A seedy finance company can take your money AND your car with no repurcussions? I have asked the insurance company to send future checks to me, but I don't know if they will. As a result of all this, I am both broke and without transportation to the many medical appointments I have.

Do not to business with Onyx Acceptance. Nothing they say can be believed. And if you talk to a collector named Angel, call the police. He needs to be arrested. Onyx, incidentally, never returns phone calls or answers letters.

Since I filed my rip-off report, I sent a link to Onyx Acceptance headquarters. I also mailed them a letter, contacted them by e-mail and telephoned them. But guess what? No one was willing to speak to me or answer my questions. Hmmmmm...can you spell g-u-t-l-e-s-s?
